Consumer Reports says this portable air conditioner is much less efficient than a comparable window unit.It's definitely more expensive than a window air conditioner (probably at least double the cost); you're paying for appearance and convenience, not functionality.(It's easy to disconnect this unit and roll it away into a corner or closet.)

I bought two of these for two rooms with sliding casement windows that posed problems for window units -- and I didn't want to bother with installing and then removing bulky window units every season.One of the rooms is a very large bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, and the Frigidaire portable air conditioner has no problem keeping it cool.Your options for placing the unit are rather limited -- there is a somewhat flexible duct that must be run from the back of the unit to a window (or a hole through an exterior wall), and you also need a nearby electrical outlet, preferably on an isolated circuit.

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical Controls Review

I recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

After running the air conditioner for about two hours (on high), the bedroom will be fairly cool, but I'm not sure how it's doing on humidity. I never see any water dripping outside, but you can hear the water slurping around in the back of the unit.

However, this 6,000 BTU a/c does NOT get the room cold, cold, cold. My bedroom is 12' by 17' with 9' ceilings and while it keeps it comfy, it doesn't make it bitter cold. I like to wake up in the morning with a little frost on the comforter and bluish lips. This unit can't do that. Even if it runs all night on high, max temp, it never gets the room past "comfy cold."

And it's noisy. I don't mind some white noise so I'm able to sleep even when the thing is blaring away but some folks might be disturbed by the loud fan motor.

For the money, it's a good deal and it'll cool down an average-size room but it's very cheaply made. The unit arrives partially disassembled (which surprised me). The top bar and side pleats have to be installed. The styrofoam shipping blocks in the vents are nearly impossible to get out. Ick.

And those accordian pleats on the side can't possibly last more than a couple years. They're thin and light and I was afraid of breaking them whilst doing the install! (Pass the duct tape, please.) The shroud inside the unit (where the cold air blows) is lined with chincy-looking plastic and styrofoam. Short of making it out of corrugated cardboard, I don't believe it'd be possible to make this unit any more cheaply. But if it lasts for a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.

One last note, this has the LOWEST efficiency rating of any unit on the market. You get what you pay for.

I bought three of these units so I could survive the summer, so I guess I've voted with my wallet. They're cheap, loud, chincy-looking and don't cool all that well, but they'll keep me from going stark-raving mad when the temps start to climb.

I use this AC to cool my bedroom that's about 225 sq. ft. The manufacturer claims this unit is capable of cooling easily upto 250 sq. ft.
I've been using this AC for a week. The air it puts out is definately cool but this AC cannot cool the room more than 2-3 degrees, yes, farenheit. It cools the room by a couple degrees in the first hour, after that I can't see any difference whether the AC is on or not.
Well, ok, to be fair, the difference is that it does make noise and consume gobs of power without cooling anything.

Not sure what's wrong with R. Richardson's unit, but mine works like a charm.We have a 16' x 20' with cathedral ceiling bedroom that we use this in.I previously had a single hose unit and was intrigued by the dual hose design.It definitely cools A LOT faster than my old single hose design.The tubes are an eye-sore, but hey, they're better than a permanent window unit...in my opinion.So far, I have only used the air conditioner, so I cannot comment on how well the heater works.However, the AC unit has NO problem cooling our large room down to a nice 63 degrees.It'll even go to 61, but that's too cool even for us.

My advice to R. Richardson...you either have installed it wrong or have a bum unit.Either way, your experience is probably atypical.

I purchased this air conditioner for $180.00 new. I used it three times and it just stopped working. There isa circuit breaker on the end of the power supply cord of this unit. It must provide some sort of voltage drop that the unit senses. Anyway, the breaker on the cord didn't just kick, it died. Hence, the unit ceased to function at all. I contacted several part suppliers and the lowest price I found on a replacement cord was $59.00. For that amount I could almost buy a new yet smaller A.C. unit. The price is high, the quality is at the very best, POOR, the parts are outrageous if you can find them, and I will NEVER own another goldstar product. Take my advice and go for a G.E. product.

It was a monster. It was very loud, I needed to wear a pair of ear plug while I was sleeping. Draining water was a disaster. (this is the reason I return it). I only used it for 3 nights about 24 hrs, and the monitor showed full (it was not humid in our area, we havn't had rain about 1 month).OK, I got the drain pan and a drain tube that came with the product. The drain pan is about 10cmX8cm and 1.2cm deep, however, it is shallow that can only contain about 1/2 cup of water. the drain tube is about 50cm (1 1/2 in)I plugged the tube into the drain hole and have the pan to catch water from the tube. The first load water filled out the pan so quickly, so water spilled on the floor. The second load I reacted quicker before drain pan filled of water. I use right hand to hold the tube upright (so water would not come out), the other hand to dump water into a bucket. While I was dumping water, the tube disconnected form the drain hole, of course, water was everywhere. I was so made about its design. the drain pan is so small but water came from the machine was a lot (about more than half gallon). Anyway, whoever wants to buy this product, I will not recommend this product.

Friedrich XQ08L10A 8,000 BTU X-Star Series Window Air Conditioner Review

This thing really throws out the cold air. I measured the air temperature at 26 deg. coming out of the vent. Most other AC's I've had are around 38-40 deg. I really like the programmable features as I have it set to go on about an hour or 2 before I go to bed so my room is nice and cool, and it goes off in the middle of the night. The low fan speed is also very low which makes it quieter. I've noticed on a lot of other units the low speed is not that low, so you get more fan noise. Also the compressor seems relatively quiet, not sure if it's any quieter than other units, but I don't have a problem sleeping with this on, and I'm sensitive to noise when I sleep.

On the negative side, when the compressor first comes on it's a little noisier for a couple minutes then quiets down. So if it's cycling on and off very much, it can be irritating, probably not too noticeable though if it's not in a bedroom.Also the thermostat goes down to 60 deg, but it won't get the room that cold, it usually starts cycling on and off at about 67-68, but it still can get the room down to 64-65 deg.

It's a solid AC, seems like it shouldn't have the negatives I mentioned for the price of the unit, but it still throws out a lot of very cold air, so it could be worth it.

Think very hard before buying this machine.We bought it with the hope it might actually cool down a room, or at least keep a room comfortable, but alas nothing of the sort was achieved.Instead we are left with a frightfully noisy and large thing that fails simply does not work.

It is besides a very poorly engineered machine, demanding that one spends half an hour at a time just adding or subtracting one of the hoses depending on how hot it is outside.And then one is left to refit it to the window, which cannot be done without copious amounts of unsightly gaffer tape.The instruction guide is so idiotically conceived as to explain, with an entire page of the booklet, how to fit batteries into the remote, yet not a word was written on how to connect any of the hoses, nor how to adjust the vent.

It should be a crime that such a machine be allowed to be sold.Do yourself a favor and buy something, anything, else.

Sunpentown Portable Air Conditioner 14,000 BTU w/ remote control, ionizer and UV light Review

We have the WA-1220M model of this product (virtually identical). If you stand right in front on it, up to about 5 feet away, it's nice. However, it has several drawbacks:

1. It isn't very good at drying the air; evaporation is needed for effective air-conditioning (whether in your car or your home).

2. It must be drained of the water it does pull from the air, and draining the unit is very cumbersome. It comes with a small flexible plastic tube that has to be connected to the rear bottom of the unit; the other end must be lower in order to drain or the unit really does very little and although there's an indicator light that will come on if the unit is quite full of water, it's very rare that the light comes on (and it only does so LONG after the unit has stopped cooling the air). We have taken to wrapping a large towel around the far end of the tube to collect water that drains, but basically you must tilt the heavy unit backwards to try to drain it. This is not particularly effective but it must be done.

3. It has wheels, but it doesn't roll easily (it's hard to push or pull it in a straight line and the wheels are so small even getting over a low rug is difficult.

4. Moving the unit up or down a single step can be accomplished by one person but since the entire unit is made of very smooth, slippery plastic (it has handles but they're very shallow & not helpful), it's more safely accomplished with two people.

5. Consider that this unit, while mobile, sacrifices a good window seal. The large exhaust hose (which pumps the hot air outside) resembles a telescoping dryer hose that easily falls out of the backside of the unit and is awkward to extend evenly. The unit comes with a smallish piece of foam with a cutout hole for the hose. However, you are left with having to find some way to block the rest of whatever window you choose to put the hole into. We use a large carboard box panel and cut a hole out of, then duct-tape the box into the window opening to block out air seepage. As you can imagine, it looks pretty tacky.

We wouldn't buy this again.

First, the good - it is utterly simple to set up with excellent instructions.It glides smoothly across the floor and has an ample cord.I purchased this one because of one I bought several years ago that has run like a charm.The cooling ducts angle well and move smoothly.

Why only 3 stars you ask?Some moron designed this air conditioner to run only with a remote; there isn't even a power switch on board.If you lose the remote (we all know that never happens), break the remote or it ceases to function you have no air conditioner.Would I have bought it knowing that - NO and Amazon should be ashamed for not making that little feature clear in their product description.Too bad as this is a 5 star unit in 3 star clothes.

Now that I have had this unit in for several months...I can speak to how it really works.As with most heat pump type units, it lacks the heat output during the very cold days and night, but overall, does a pretty good job in my wood shop.Be advised that you really need to keep the filters cleaned if it is used in a dusty envoironment.The cooling worked great...the building is a 24X24 with 13' ceilings.Had no issues when it was hot outside up to 95 degrees.The only issue with installation is the instructions do lack some.You cannot do it yourself as you will need a vaccuum pump from an HVAC indivdual to vaccuum out the lines when setting it up.Plus, the electrically hookups are buried inside the unit...which are not clearly expained in the manual.I was unable to locate them myself and only with great pain, did the HVAC guy even find them.In the end, I like the unit and will purchase a similiar one for my house soon.

In addition to the points made by the prior reviewer (except I was able to get the tape to stick), it is impossible to put the quilted cover on - the elastic is WAY too tight. If you get the next size, the elastic is still very tight - but now the cover is too big and looks awful. Maybe 4 strong hands are needed to get the thing on, which is absurd. Buy bubblewrap or save thin foam - and masking tape would probably be fine. AVOID THIS PRODUCT!

I own this model and absolutely love it.It puts out ice cold air every time you press the power button.I use this to cool a 500 square foot room and it tackles the challenge in as little time as a half hour (mostly from 75 degrees to about 65 to 68, if left on for 2 hours on high and level 3 for the fan it will cool my room to 60.LG offers an exceptional in home service warranty on most of their products, no other manufacturer offers that.Regardless of were you buy this, your going to get a great warranty for free.

It is heavy and takes care installing, don't be a hero, use 2 people to install or else it will end up in pieces on your front lawn.Also you will need some sort of stand or bracket to rest this thing on so think about that when you make your purchase.All heavy/high BTU models require this.

For the size of this A/C and the BTU's it puts out it is fairly quiet considering.Don't get me wrong, you will hear it and you will have to turn up the TV but compared to most 10000 and 12000 BTU's it is just as quiet.Mine is in the window about 2 feet from my head when I am sitting on the couch and all that is needed it to bump my TV volume up 2 notches.After 30 minutes I switch it to economode and it cuts the noise level by a 1/3.

I highly recommend this A/C model as it has failed to let me down.Very easy to use, cools your room quickly, tackles high Square footage efficiently and is cheep when it comes to operating costs.You can't go wrong.I was let down to see someone gave this a 1 star rating for ridiculous reasons.This is my 3rd year using this model and it works just as good as the 1st day I turned it on. I would buy this model over and over again and would highly recommend it to family and friends.You CAN'T go wrong.

I was surprised to see they are still making this model.I purchased mine in 2005 and still use it to this day.

It is made by LG which makes great products so don't be fooled by the generic Goldstar name.

This A/C is fairly light and is very easy to install.It is rather quiet, I haven't seen an A/C that can match this one in that aspect.

This A/C pumps out some cold air and has the power to go above and beyond its recommended use.This might be a 10000 BTU A/C but has the heart of a 12000 BTU A/C.

I use this as back-up for my LG 15000BTU model in a 500 Square foot room.When my LG reaches a certain room temperature I shut it off and turn this one on.On economode it will maintain the temp in the room and cut the operating noise of my LG to about 1/2.

In the past I used this to solely cool down 2 rooms equalling about 400 square feet.I maintained a 65 degree temp, it took about 2 to 3 hours to reach that goal on high speed but easily maintained it on the economode for the rest of the day.

It is small and fits in windows most A/C's can't, which is a big plus and will keep you from having to go with the stand up models.If I did not damage the side slides this would be in my bedroom and not being used as back up in a smaller window in my living room.

This is perfect for the bedroom or TV room.I have never used this A/C for anything smaller than 400 square feet and can only imagine its efficiently in the smaller room it was designed for.

This is a best buy when it comes to low priced A/C's, it is cheap, light weight and very efficient, you can't go wrong.

I ordered the Klimaire 24000. I installed the unit (instructions are terrible) and after some difficulty (problems with the power cables and the copper tubes bend like cardboard), it finally turned on and the fan began running, and air was coming out, and the thermostat was set to 76, so I let it run for an hour, but the air is still not blowing cold...

I contacted the manufacture for help. But no response from them yet.

It came with an "installation kit" - but my neighbor told me that the "installation kit" (just some wires and copper tube) doesn't have everything I need to install it. So I guess I need some other equipment to install this thing: vacuum pump, freon, evacuation equipment, etc... to get this thing working. I'm going to hire a professional A/C guy tomorrow but my neighbor said it would have been much cheaper to just have the A/C guy come and install his own unit.

SPT WA-1010H 10,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote-Control Cooling and Heating Review

This is not my 1st portable however this is my first combo heater and air conditioner.

Compared to previous experience, this unit has a loud fan!

My limited experience with the heat function has it appearing to be a mini-heat pump! It sure blew cold air out the exhaust. Bad news if you don't have it vented :-/

Max. Plate rating is 6A @ 120VAC. I while have not put a watt-meter on it, and doubt it goes beyond 5A. I think the 10,000 BTU rating is a little generous.

As required by US Federal law, it has a GFI on the end of the cord. This can be an issue in dry climates as the ground can literally dry out!

The air filter is typical, which is to say stock cheap and cheesy. Spraying with something like endust helps.

If I could find a quieter 2 in 1, I would replace this unit. Until then, I hope it keeps functioning.

2009 update. Units of this type use a sort of an open evaporator tray, not unlike a refrigerator. Using a # of hours per day requires a drain hose (standard garden thread) to be attached at the bottom (after removing screw plug).

Otherwise you will see a red light, and nothing else until you drain the unit. As the drain is on the bottom and rear, consider getting the unit up 1M/3Ft to get a drain going or at least a bucket.

It shut off on me in the middle of the night, during a several day cold spell, until I drained the unit.

Yes, it is still on the noisy side. Will heat/cool a room up to about 12x14 in a milder climate. I guess 10x12 in harsher weather.

So initially I had bought this unit and had a bad experience with it. It had just stopped working after a couple of weeks. Surprisingly enough Miallegro is pro-active in helping their customers. They replaced it and shipped it for free. Not only that, but their customer service is actually polite. As we all know, lots of companies have rude customer service. I just had to get that out of the way in case any of you have issues with your fan.

Now onto my review of the product. I was looking for this particular type of fan because the fans that oscillate the entire tower always end up giving me problems. With the inner oscillation, I find it to be more reliable. This 2nd unit has been just that. Also the fan is rather quiet on the low setting. The medium and high settings on the fan move a large amount of air without the annoying loudness that most fans have. Unless you're a light sleeper, you'll be able to sleep with this on. If you have issues with limited floorspace, you'll be pleased to know that this fan takes up an extremely small amount of space for the job it does. Lastly, this fan just looks cool. It's sleek, has that l.e.d. display, and the display slides back to reveal the remote's location.

Overall I'd have to say that I'm quite pleased with this fan. It does the job it's designed to do and it does it well. For being a brand that isn't as well-known as the major brands, in my case it stands above them.

I am generally happy with my air cooler, but only under the conditions I use it.Let me clarify; This is a great SUPPLEMENT to an air conditioner.My bedroom will not cool down, no matter what temperature you set the air conditioner.The air cooler does a nice job of cooling it down up to 5 degrees (with cold tap water).Not to mention the added benefit of the humidity.I could add ice, which would greatly help, but that would be more work and would cause my fridge to output more hot air.(Simple physics - heat exchange.Too bad I don't have a fridge outside.)If you added ice, and your fridge was outside, it could MAYBE be a substitute for an air conditioner for one room, but I have not tried it.

You should buy this product for your room if:
*You already have an air conditioner
*Your house is very dry
*You like/miss humidity (good for sinuses)
*You don't want to put an air conditioner in your window, or another air conditioner in your window. (Big advantage if you rent)
*You want to save electricity (Uses less than air conditioner)
*It does have a remote and a timer which is nice.It also has different speeds which is nice, and includes some other useless buttons.

Keep in mind:
*It will stop working once the humidity gets high.It helps to own a humidistat.For this reason, I use it only at night.Of course, if you own an air conditioner, it will eventually take the humidity out of the air and you can use the air cooler again.
*The water must be changed daily, preferably right before use.(Colder water = better)
*Even if you change the water every day, the pan will have to be cleaned well at least once a month.
*Mine started making an annoying rattling sound for the first few minutes.I can't figure out what the sound is, how it's make, or how to stop it.So, if I am going to sleep, I have to turn it on at least a half hour before.

Good quality product. Heavy, durable plastic - confident that it will endure a number of cold winters. The elastic in the bottom also felt sturdy. The only negative is that there's no allowance made for a side-fed power cable. This means in practice that you can't pull the cover completely down on all 4 sides. Having said that, it still affords good protection and is worth the money.

Frigidaire FAH106S1T Through-the-Wall 10,000 BTU Air Conditioner Review

Just a note: I am reviewing the AC unit itself and not the vendor mentioned in the other two reviews. FYI: I purchased the AC from Lowes.

The AC works great. I've had it for two years and it has served us well. Very dependable and did a great job cooling the bedroom. Remote looks good but we don't use it at all. Energy Saver works great. The fan also works great on cool days with the windows open.Great through the wall unit.Came back to see if I could find another for the second bedroom as that AC unit conked. It's pretty quiet, at least I found it to be not too loud.
