Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTUWe purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the LimitedFive Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only).I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California.I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in.They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250.For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.

I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage.I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

DeLonghi CF210 8500 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

DeLonghi CF210 8500 BTU Portable Air ConditionerWe ordered this item for a lake vacation at an unairconditioned cottage; our vacation happened to coincide with a record heat wave (90+ F) in the US that lasted our entire holiday (a week). The DeLonghi CF210 8500 BTU Portable Air Conditioner got a good, real-life, test---and it's a mixed bag.

The good:

-- Arrived quickly and undamaged from Amazon (FedEx ground).
-- Good packaging---the box lifts off once the straps are cut.
-- Rolls easily on castors; important because its heavy.
-- Easy setup---our cottage had odd windows, yet we were able to vent.
-- Dehumidifies very well.

The bad:

-- Modest cooling ability; achieved at most 5-10 degrees cooler than outside.
-- When run continuously, the condensate water cup fills in 4 hours or less.
-- Requires fans (we used cheap box fans) to circulate the cooler air.
-- The vent tubing is not insulated, we wrapped it in towels.
-- Heavy (90 lb or so) and bulky.
-- Annoying safety plug that periodically turned off the unit.
-- Could not keep up in the peak heat of the day (95+); we opened up and re-cooled later nearer bedtime.

While it was not a great air conditioner (although it was a large cottage), it was a good dehumidifier and we were glad we had it at bedtime. My family does not sleep well in humid conditions and having a dehumidifier that vents outside (and therefore did not heat up the interior) was helpful.

The biggest problem with this unit is the water cup; the unit shuts off when it's full and when trying to run this overnight it will shut off at least once while you are sleeping.Ourcottage quickly re-heated when the unit turned off, so we had to get up periodically to empty the water cup. There did NOT seem to be any easy way to continuously drain on this model. This was the most annoying problem we had with this air conditioner.

Overall, in the circumstances we were in (poorly insulated unairconditioned cottage with odd windows), we happier that we had it than not. It's an expensive, weak air conditioner and good dehumidifier, but in a humid heat wave was acceptable.

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote Control Review

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote ControlUPDATE 5/5/2010: This unit is still running as efficiently and effectively as ever. We are very, very happy with our purchase.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at our local Costco (because of good pricing and their great return policy) after researching and reading mixed online reviews on MANY, MANY portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're currently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA near L.A.) right on the ocean and the humidity is pretty high. We've used it on days with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are still waiting for a really hot day to hit. It might not happen this year, but it certainly did last year. We use it in our upstairs bedroom--approximately 180 square feet--with the door shut to keep our cats out.

The results:

* Noise: Fantastic. We used to have one fan blowing on full-speed in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan was, by probably 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a little water trickling from time to time, but that doesn't really bother us, and it's certainly not constant. We sleep like babies with this unit about a foot away from the bed.

* Cooling: Again, top-notch. I really wasn't expecting much from a portable after reading so many bad reviews for all of the portable air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it was 83F outside (and probably close to 90F in our bedroom) and, being pessimistic in our expectations, we put it on the MegaCool setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2 hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse (approximately 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had already dropped a good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a few more hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--better than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what felt like near 50F is very reasonable. Since then, we've kept it between 67F and 70F.

* Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the battery life.

* Dehumidifying: It's unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the air here. Remember, we live right on the ocean, so it's always very humid. I LOVE that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and that my husband and I can sleep touching without sticking to each other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is really wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified bedroom, it gets very close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair immediately starts curling. My husband tends to laugh at how quickly the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I never had this experience with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It dehumidifies REALLY well.

* Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and probably could have gotten away with doing it once. A lot of the water evaporates right out of the window, and the tank seems to have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if the tank gets too full. The method is also pretty easy. The drain is far enough off the floor that you can use a bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even though it has an on/off valve, the off position doesn't seem to work. We have to make sure the stopper is in securely no matter what setting the valve is on.

* Construction: Seems to be quite durable, but not overly heavy. My husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was definitely heavy, but it was doable (I'm 6', average to above-average strength for a woman, and not too concerned about breaking a nail, though). Once out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.

* Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and not perfectly written, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to assemble most of the unit without them if you have a decent amount of common sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any better. From my research, they all use similar methods, so I can't really complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is designed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece needs to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a slight problem with this because we have windows that open horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or wooden--it's recessed and metal. We ended up having to make a workaround--some measuring and a quick trip to the local lumber yard, and we had a few plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something solid, the other braces the sliding part of the window up against the unit. A bit of a pain, but not too bad nor too ugly.

* Other features: The adjustable louvers work very well. We like to point them up at the ceiling while we sleep, giving nice cool air and great circulation without freezing us out. The Plasmacluster functionality is nice, but when it's on, the unit shows a very BRIGHT blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run Plasmacluster at night--you may need to find a way to cover the light up. [EDIT 5/5/2010: We have since discovered the nifty "Lights" button on the remote control. This turns off the lights on the unit without making you turn off the Plasmacluster functionality, so no worries there any more.]

All in all, we're both so glad we bought this unit. We were mulling over whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought for a few months. We agree that we should have just gone ahead and done it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been much more bearable, and we would have been much better rested!!

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical Controls Review

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical ControlsI recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

After running the air conditioner for about two hours (on high), the bedroom will be fairly cool, but I'm not sure how it's doing on humidity. I never see any water dripping outside, but you can hear the water slurping around in the back of the unit.

However, this 6,000 BTU a/c does NOT get the room cold, cold, cold. My bedroom is 12' by 17' with 9' ceilings and while it keeps it comfy, it doesn't make it bitter cold. I like to wake up in the morning with a little frost on the comforter and bluish lips. This unit can't do that. Even if it runs all night on high, max temp, it never gets the room past "comfy cold."

And it's noisy. I don't mind some white noise so I'm able to sleep even when the thing is blaring away but some folks might be disturbed by the loud fan motor.

For the money, it's a good deal and it'll cool down an average-size room but it's very cheaply made. The unit arrives partially disassembled (which surprised me). The top bar and side pleats have to be installed. The styrofoam shipping blocks in the vents are nearly impossible to get out. Ick.

And those accordian pleats on the side can't possibly last more than a couple years. They're thin and light and I was afraid of breaking them whilst doing the install! (Pass the duct tape, please.) The shroud inside the unit (where the cold air blows) is lined with chincy-looking plastic and styrofoam. Short of making it out of corrugated cardboard, I don't believe it'd be possible to make this unit any more cheaply. But if it lasts for a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.

One last note, this has the LOWEST efficiency rating of any unit on the market. You get what you pay for.

I bought three of these units so I could survive the summer, so I guess I've voted with my wallet. They're cheap, loud, chincy-looking and don't cool all that well, but they'll keep me from going stark-raving mad when the temps start to climb.

Frigidaire FAC104P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC104P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI read two reviews for this air conditioner that complained about noise.I purchased the next, newer model, the FAC105P1A, and was hoping the noise problem was fixed, but it wasn't. Not only was it loud in the room where I installed it, but it was also loud in the room next to it and on the floor above. Needless to say I returned it. It wasn't just the noise of the cool air being blown--it had a whining, humming noise that drove us crazy. Stay away from Frigedaire.

Frigidaire FAC106P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC106P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI was worried about buying this, because some reviews said it was noisy, but it's not bad at all.If you buy a window AC you can't expect it to be silent - I find it completely tolerable.I can even stand in front of it & talk to people on the phone without a problem. The fan is powerful, too.I never put it higher than low & it cools my apartment very well.I find the timer & other features very useful, especially remote sensing.I am really happy I bought this.

My place is basically an M layout, with the AC in the farthest leg, & I can go in the other rooms without needing a fan.I'm still impressed by that.If you are shopping around because you're price-conscious, this is the best 10,000 btu deal you are going to get - everywhere else charges at least $50 of shipping & frequently more for the AC itself. You probably want a friend to help you install it, as it weighs 83 lbs.

This AC has single-handedly made the hot, sticky, humid NYC summers totally bearable & I can't recommend it highly enough!

Frigidaire FAC124P1A Compact II 12,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC124P1A Compact II 12,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI ordered this unit from Amazon during the two week plus heat wave here in southern California when it remained at over 110 degrees during the day and 85 degrees at night. During this time our old 10,000 BTU Sears unit died and you couldn't buy, beg, borrow or steal a suitable replacement in SoCal. When we received this Frigidaire, I immediately installed it and ran it nonstop for almost two weeks. The installation was easy and the Frigidaire easily outperformed the Sears on its best day. The continually variable fan speed which resets as needed during the "auto cool" setting is really effective at cooling a room.

Probably the best feature of this a/c, besides its outstanding performance, is its compact size. We live in an ancient house and only have 21 3/8 inches of window opening space. The Frigidaire is only 19 1/8 inches wide, an inch less than the 10,000 BTU Sears a/c it replaced. I am aware that there are "casement" style a/c units available for narrow window openings. Unfortunately, after extensive investigation of these units, it seems that they are less fully featured than the non casement a/c units.

If this Frigidaire is ever available on Amazon again, I'll buy a spare. I might even buy two.

Frigidaire FAA084P7A MS II 8,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAA084P7A MS II 8,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI bought 2 of these last spring because we don't have central air or anything else to keep us cool. They were really worth it. Not only did they keep us cool but they didn't bump up the bills too much. They are really noisy though. It's hard to hear music or tv above it. The one in the bedroom was great though because my husband like to sleep with white noise anyway. Came with a remote control which is nice if you are in bed and need to change anything. But you need to kind of memorize where the buttons are and what they do because it doesn't light up. Kept us really cool, love them.

Frigidaire FAX054P7A Unit Air Conditioner Review

Frigidaire FAX054P7A Unit Air ConditionerWe now have 3 different air conditioners in our apartment that we've acquired over the past year in New York and this one is by far the best.

Besides this unit, we have a cheap manual 5,000 BTU unit (Daewoo) and a $300 7,500 BTU SPT portable air conditioner. The Daewoo doesn't have an automatic shut off or an energy saver temperature control function like the Frigidaire unit and its almost twice as loud. The STP, though quieter and energy efficient, is a BIG unit that takes up quite a bit of space in our bedroom (65 pounds, roughly 3 feet tall).Though its more energy efficient (An EER of over 12!), it does not have an automatic shutoff (just a timer) or a remote control like the Frigidaire.

The Frigidaire is a really elegant unit and perfect for a room with a television. If one of our other units breaks, I'll definitely replace it with another one of these!
