Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTUWe purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the LimitedFive Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only).I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California.I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in.They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250.For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.

I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage.I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTUFor what it's worth, a certain store with the intitials 'HD' will take back anything, even after a year.We bought this from '*ears' (if you know what I mean) and I am sure they could care less about anything 13 mos. out from the warranty period. Here's my review.

I bought 2 Royal Soverign a/c units, 12,000 BTU from Sears in 6/08.We haven't used them a whole lot. Ours are tan with a black exhaust area/top. Models ARP 3012. We paid $599 each.

We left for the day and like we always do, turn the a/c to a lower setting.A family member had stopped over and I had her check to make sure the a/c was on. She said the unit upstairs was off.I thought that was odd, as I had left it on.When she turned it on, it sounded like 100 forks in a garbage disposal.I could hear it over the phone. Apparently, due to the issue, the unit was over-heating and then turning itself off.We are lucky the house didn't burn down.

When we got home we looked into the issue and after removing the tubing from the unit, we instantly found shards of cheap black plastic. Some parts looked tube like.We removed the 14 screws on the back, cleaned up the broken plastic laying inside the unit (we thought it was part of the exhaust) and thinking everything was fine (but were were still going to look into what that tubing was for) and we put the back of the unit back on and we turned it on.More horrible breaking of plastic sounds and then more plastic was sucked into the tubing. We're thinking that the case that surrounds the fan blade and compressor is breaking up. We are sure that this will eventually happen with our 2nd unit.I would not buy a Royal Soverign brand. I'll check back and give an update when I can as we have plans to drop it off at a service location. The compressor is covered for 5 years. We will not be paying a dime to have this fixed!

Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote ControlThis is the worst A/C I have ever seen. First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

Product Description:
With a cooling capacity of 7,800 BTUs, this window air conditioner helps maintain a comfortable living space during the hot and muggy summer months. The unit's easy-to-use electronic controls provide a digital time and temperature display, plus a convenient 24-hour on/off timer--great for cooling the living room right before arriving home from work or for keeping the bedroom at a perfect sleeping temperature then turning off on its own in the morning. Choose from three cool settings and three fan speeds. A full-function remote control comes included for changing the settings from across the room. Other highlights include top-discharge airflow; an Enviro-Clean coil; an electrostatic air filter that reduces the presence of mold, dust, and pollen; ultra-quiet operation; and easy installation with the included quick-snap curtain install kit. Best of all, the appliance has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. All of which means more comfortable indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. The window air conditioner measures 18-1/2 by 15-1/2 by 12-2/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

GE Thru-the-Wall Air Conditioner AJCQ08ACC Review

GE Thru-the-Wall Air Conditioner AJCQ08ACCBought the 10,000btu unit but I'm sure this mode is engineered the same.

If you use the A/C in the Continuous fan mode (most window type A/C units use this mode)
the unit works fine and is recommended.... BUT

If you want to use it in the Cycle fan mode (most whole house units use this mode)
the unit doesn't work correctly due to the thermister (temperature sensor) NOT
sensing room temperature because room air is needed to operate the sensor
correctly and cycle mode doesn't initially run the fan to pull room air into the unit.
The sensor can lag several degrees (8-14) behind actual room temperatures.
Needs engineering enhancement, like a remote thermostat, to work correctly.
GE actually blow me off as to a fix, so I'm stuck with a unit that doesn't run in
cycle mode and isn't worth a hill of beans!

Fedders AZEY08F2A White 3500/8000 BTU 10.8 EER Heat And Cool Window Air Conditioner with Full Funct Review

Fedders AZEY08F2A White 3500/8000 BTU 10.8 EER Heat And Cool Window Air Conditioner with Full FunctFought like the dickens to get this specific version because only one other on the market has the following:
... Controls on the left
...8000btu or less WITH HEAT (not heat pump, electric heat to warm you)
... Remote

The other costs hundreds more and is a Friedrich.I rarely turn on the AC and didn't want to spend that much more.AAFeders dot com has these in stock as of May 2010.YesINCORRECTLY SPELLED.Delivery cross country is in just days.THE GREAT
Sometimes just a whisper OF QUIET but it can gurgle a bit like a tiny babbling brook.
When I cleaned up I realize this might be because the foam insulation strips were left off.If I find out I'll let you know in an update.
Heat is constant air sound like a white noise machine and though it feels only lukewarm, it actually will take the room to 86d degrees and roast you like a piglet in no time at all.
Cool feels fantastic, but I'm not having a hot day here yet.

THE NOT SO GREAT
The Fan Speed button on the control panel FAILS in every mode except cool.It operates in LOW ONLY unless I use the REMOTE to select Med and High speed fan activity.

NOT as QUIET as I wanted. At 14ft you don't hear it at all but at 12inches to 3ft it is loud enough to disturb low volume tv watching but it doesn't do any annoying groaning, popping or banging as it cycles.I'm a light sleeper and was able to sleep inches from it.

The picture if you see one where the louvers run the full width of the top of the unit THAT IS NOT RIGHT.That's the 10000BTU unit. This version has the older look with small set of controls top left taking up what would be some of the louver space.

The description says the louvers rotate up and down.Well they do rotate UP and back to neutral but NOT DOWN.

I'll post a pic so you can see.Global Industrial dot com had shown it right but is out of stock and took the listing down altogether.Haven't tested the AUTO feature. If it works well it will be a first for any heating or cooling appliance I've bought to actually have even a reasonably accurate thermostat function.

If you are wondering why I give it such a high rating, it is an inexpensive model at $308-315 (don't pay more than $375) and its annoyances/flaws are easy to deal with.

**MEASURING WINDOW OPENING**
Do notice the image added. The minimum height needed for this model is 16.25 inches and 16.5 would make it easier on your installer. It is not the 15+ stated on some store's tech sheet.

When measuring start ABOVE the lip some window frame have.Don't start down on the sill as the installation manual indicates. I did that and if I didn't have an installer who could reconfig my window the unit would have had to be shipped back!

Don't assume your window can go up where the bottom of the edge of the front most pane lines up with the bottom of the upper pane. You may have stops and other window elements that prevent the lower sash from rising that much.Really push it up all the way then measure, don't assume.

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical Controls Review

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical ControlsI recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

After running the air conditioner for about two hours (on high), the bedroom will be fairly cool, but I'm not sure how it's doing on humidity. I never see any water dripping outside, but you can hear the water slurping around in the back of the unit.

However, this 6,000 BTU a/c does NOT get the room cold, cold, cold. My bedroom is 12' by 17' with 9' ceilings and while it keeps it comfy, it doesn't make it bitter cold. I like to wake up in the morning with a little frost on the comforter and bluish lips. This unit can't do that. Even if it runs all night on high, max temp, it never gets the room past "comfy cold."

And it's noisy. I don't mind some white noise so I'm able to sleep even when the thing is blaring away but some folks might be disturbed by the loud fan motor.

For the money, it's a good deal and it'll cool down an average-size room but it's very cheaply made. The unit arrives partially disassembled (which surprised me). The top bar and side pleats have to be installed. The styrofoam shipping blocks in the vents are nearly impossible to get out. Ick.

And those accordian pleats on the side can't possibly last more than a couple years. They're thin and light and I was afraid of breaking them whilst doing the install! (Pass the duct tape, please.) The shroud inside the unit (where the cold air blows) is lined with chincy-looking plastic and styrofoam. Short of making it out of corrugated cardboard, I don't believe it'd be possible to make this unit any more cheaply. But if it lasts for a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.

One last note, this has the LOWEST efficiency rating of any unit on the market. You get what you pay for.

I bought three of these units so I could survive the summer, so I guess I've voted with my wallet. They're cheap, loud, chincy-looking and don't cool all that well, but they'll keep me from going stark-raving mad when the temps start to climb.

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out Chassis Review

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out ChassisI purchased this air conditioner for $180.00 new. I used it three times and it just stopped working. There isa circuit breaker on the end of the power supply cord of this unit. It must provide some sort of voltage drop that the unit senses. Anyway, the breaker on the cord didn't just kick, it died. Hence, the unit ceased to function at all. I contacted several part suppliers and the lowest price I found on a replacement cord was $59.00. For that amount I could almost buy a new yet smaller A.C. unit. The price is high, the quality is at the very best, POOR, the parts are outrageous if you can find them, and I will NEVER own another goldstar product. Take my advice and go for a G.E. product.

Goldstar WG1005R 10,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Review

Goldstar WG1005R 10,000 BTU Window Air ConditionerI was surprised to see they are still making this model.I purchased mine in 2005 and still use it to this day.

It is made by LG which makes great products so don't be fooled by the generic Goldstar name.

This A/C is fairly light and is very easy to install. It is rather quiet, I haven't seen an A/C that can match this one in that aspect.

This A/C pumps out some cold air and has the power to go above and beyond its recommended use. This might be a 10000 BTU A/C but has the heart of a 12000 BTU A/C.

I use this as back-up for my LG 15000BTU model in a 500 Square foot room. When my LG reaches a certain room temperature I shut it off and turn this one on.On economode it will maintain the temp in the room and cut the operating noise of my LG to about 1/2.

In the past I used this to solely cool down 2 rooms equalling about 400 square feet.I maintained a 65 degree temp, it took about 2 to 3 hours to reach that goal on high speed but easily maintained it on the economode for the rest of the day.

It is small and fits in windows most A/C's can't, which is a big plus and will keep you from having to go with the stand up models. If I did not damage the side slides this would be in my bedroom and not being used as back up in a smaller window in my living room.

This is perfect for the bedroom or TV room.I have never used this A/C for anything smaller than 400 square feet and can only imagine its efficiently in the smaller room it was designed for.

This is a best buy when it comes to low priced A/C's, it is cheap, light weight and very efficient, you can't go wrong.

Haier ESA3105 10,000-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Haier ESA3105 10,000-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote ControlThis is a poorly made product from a company with virtually no support. After opening the package and preparing for installation, I noticed there were several parts missing. This is a large unti and was sitting in the middle of my living room unable to be installed. I called customer support and told them I needed a solution to the problem right away, their only suggestion was to take it back to the store or wait three weeks for them to ship the part. The person I spoke to was rude and very difficult to understand. Thanks to their poor assembly I had to carry it back down three flights of stairs and return it to the store. I got another unit and I insisted on checking it before I left the store and what a surprise; this one was missing parts as well. Different parts, mind you, so it is unlikely that it was some sort of mechanical error during packing. I finally got one with everything, installed it (which is a nightmare in and of itself) andonly when it was installed did I notice that the aparatus used for opening/closing the vents was not there. This isn't a part you attach yourself, the mechanism for opening and closing the vent was never installed. Spend the extra money and buy a better brand, I will never purchase a Haier appliance again.

Frigidaire FAC104P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC104P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI read two reviews for this air conditioner that complained about noise.I purchased the next, newer model, the FAC105P1A, and was hoping the noise problem was fixed, but it wasn't. Not only was it loud in the room where I installed it, but it was also loud in the room next to it and on the floor above. Needless to say I returned it. It wasn't just the noise of the cool air being blown--it had a whining, humming noise that drove us crazy. Stay away from Frigedaire.

Frigidaire FAC106P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC106P1A Compact II 10,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI was worried about buying this, because some reviews said it was noisy, but it's not bad at all.If you buy a window AC you can't expect it to be silent - I find it completely tolerable.I can even stand in front of it & talk to people on the phone without a problem. The fan is powerful, too.I never put it higher than low & it cools my apartment very well.I find the timer & other features very useful, especially remote sensing.I am really happy I bought this.

My place is basically an M layout, with the AC in the farthest leg, & I can go in the other rooms without needing a fan.I'm still impressed by that.If you are shopping around because you're price-conscious, this is the best 10,000 btu deal you are going to get - everywhere else charges at least $50 of shipping & frequently more for the AC itself. You probably want a friend to help you install it, as it weighs 83 lbs.

This AC has single-handedly made the hot, sticky, humid NYC summers totally bearable & I can't recommend it highly enough!

Frigidaire FAC124P1A Compact II 12,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAC124P1A Compact II 12,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI ordered this unit from Amazon during the two week plus heat wave here in southern California when it remained at over 110 degrees during the day and 85 degrees at night. During this time our old 10,000 BTU Sears unit died and you couldn't buy, beg, borrow or steal a suitable replacement in SoCal. When we received this Frigidaire, I immediately installed it and ran it nonstop for almost two weeks. The installation was easy and the Frigidaire easily outperformed the Sears on its best day. The continually variable fan speed which resets as needed during the "auto cool" setting is really effective at cooling a room.

Probably the best feature of this a/c, besides its outstanding performance, is its compact size. We live in an ancient house and only have 21 3/8 inches of window opening space. The Frigidaire is only 19 1/8 inches wide, an inch less than the 10,000 BTU Sears a/c it replaced. I am aware that there are "casement" style a/c units available for narrow window openings. Unfortunately, after extensive investigation of these units, it seems that they are less fully featured than the non casement a/c units.

If this Frigidaire is ever available on Amazon again, I'll buy a spare. I might even buy two.

Frigidaire FAA084P7A MS II 8,000-BTU Room Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI bought 2 of these last spring because we don't have central air or anything else to keep us cool. They were really worth it. Not only did they keep us cool but they didn't bump up the bills too much. They are really noisy though. It's hard to hear music or tv above it. The one in the bedroom was great though because my husband like to sleep with white noise anyway. Came with a remote control which is nice if you are in bed and need to change anything. But you need to kind of memorize where the buttons are and what they do because it doesn't light up. Kept us really cool, love them.

Frigidaire FAA065P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAA065P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsA large brick and mortar store sells these exclusively at very low prices, and Consumer Reports had many nice things to say about them, so I bought three of them.Oh yes, three.

I remember when air conditioners weighed, minimally, sixty pounds. These weigh about forty pounds, and that makes them much easier to carry, place on a window sill, and move while positioning for the season.

They also draw slightly less than 15 amps, and have a fuse breaker built into the plug, which may or may not slightly mitigate tripped circuits or blown fuses in your home.It also starts with the compressor off for the first three minutes, so the amperage draw isn't high enough to trip a circuit. This is particularly consumer-friendly engineering.

The remote control is very nice and actually quite helpful for the kids' rooms; I can change settings without trying to creep past them at night, in case the rooms gets too cold or hot.

The units are quiet and do a very good job of colling down a room, even a 16x10 south-facing second-floor room with three windows. There are two or three issues you need to accept.

One, the energy efficient mode is probably very efficient, but somewhat intrusive. It will cycle the fan off and be perfectly quiet, then kick back on with air or cooled air as it needs it.In theory this is not a bad idea, but if it cycles every two minutes, it might keep you awake at night with noise/quiet/noise/quiet.

Two, the condensation pan does not have outlet holes, so you will be retaining a half-inch or so of water for the summer season.I do not like this at all, and removing a unit from a window means understanding this and attempting to drain it in some clever way before bringing it indoors. There should be outlet holes, period.

Three, the screw-type air deflectors are sort of hit and miss with directional quality. In general, no air conditioner manufacturer really does this right. The directional vents should be modeled after automobile air vents, with focused airflow and very generous coverage arcs.

The units are very efficient (10.7) and inexpensive, and Frigidaire will stand behind them for five years.I liked them enough to buy three, and would probably buy them again.A final note, the 8,000 BTU version is too loud for a bedroom.I had to return it and get a 6,000 BTU unit, which was fine.

Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner Review

Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air ConditionerHad new windows installed, worked and looked great, but the openings were smaller than expected.Wanted a window air conditioner for the living room.Found one at Amazon that would fit, and the reviews were good.I wasn't prepared for how well it worked, however. This little guy pumps out an amazing amount of cold air.I think the secret is, it is an older unit that was made before the energy conserving engineers got a hold of it.Maybe I should feel bad that I am not helping the environment as much as I could, but keeping me cool during a hot and humid August, somehow made the guilt go away.

If you want the most bang for your buck, buy this unit.If it can keep my living room cool, it will turn a small bedroom into a meat locker, no sweat.
