My shop is located in the SE part of the country so heat and humidity are a real problem, especially when working outdoors.
While looking for a solution, I started to wonder if the "swamp coolers" I saw on the side lines at football games might be the ticket.I was skeptical, due to the fact that the inherent high humidity would diminish the evaporative cooling that enables these devices to work.Still I saw these things everywhere, so I was interested.After a little researchI found that the current models overcome a lot of the evaporative cooling/humidity issue via modern design.
My hopes were dashed when I started pricing these coolers, BIG BUCKS!I could install a separate AC system for the same price.Then by "divine intervention", I saw a portable version, when I walked into my local NAPA store.The salesman told me the way they market these coolers, is to drop them off at local garages during the day and then pick them up after it gets hot.Once people see the difference they make, they're sold.I was sold too when I got a great deal on the end of season model.
I'm impressed with the Port-a-Cool.Temps have only been in the 80's with low humidity, but the cooling is noticeable.The fan is big enough to make a "breeze" even sitting on the driveway.It's easy to move around can be used during any outdoor activity. So far this has been a great and cost effective cooling solution.
Tip:Add ice to the reservoir for even greater cooling effect.

Great item for portablity, though slightly pricey. Be warned though, I cannot recommend using this seller "Buy From The Best Inc." In dealing with them I found their customer service was unresponsive and rude. They tried to pass the buck on to amazon and expected me to do their job for them by working out the processing problems with them. When I simply told them I expect the item I paid for within 10 days, they were UNABLE to do it and actually said that asking for my item was a threat. Haha! It had already been over a week since my order was placed. Don't risk your time and money, find a better seller. I wisely cancelled my order with them, save yourself the pain in the butt!

I wanted to put an evap cooler in our upstairs bedroom but the window where it would go was too narrow.I checked all the reviews and descriptions I could find on several different web sites and decided to go for this portable unit. It has large water capacity, easy to move, can use as a fan only, add ice for real cool air, easy to add water, is quiet enough we left it on one night while we slept.Fan force good, it really moves the air on "high".Haven't emptied it yet, we have had 100 degree weather so it has been on every day. The "humidity" controller basically just determines how much water flows over the filters.The unit does not cool the room like a window evap unit would, but I do recommend it to take the temperature down 15-20 degrees.I am very glad I purchased this product and if I needed another cooler I would get this one again. It actually isn't too bad to look at either.

GE Portable Air Conditioner 8000 BTU- APE08AK Review

We got one of these when our air went out.12x15 room so about 180sf.It would never get it down to under 78, plus here in Arkansas you have to empty the water bucket (around a quart and a half maybe) about 5 times in a 24hr period to keep it running.If you forget, it shuts off when the bucket is full to prevent overflow. That's also when it starts getting hot again.It probably works ok as a suplemental room conditioner to add a little boost, but it will not cool a 200sf area when it's hot.You have to vent it out a window anyway so why not just put in a little window unit.The one we exchanged it for (GE as well) works much better and you don't have to get up in the middle of the night and empty the bucket into your Elephant Ear.

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

We purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the LimitedFive Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only).I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California.I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in.They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250.For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.

I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage.I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Amcor AL10000EH 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Heater Review

I have had 3 of these units over the past 3 years; however, I only purchased one of them.I purchased this item about 3 years ago.It worked great for about 8 months.I didn't even have to drain the water.It just worked.Then, the compressor blew out.Because it had a 5 year warranty on the compressor, I called the company, and they actually sent me out a new unit.I can definitely say that my experience with their customer service was great.So, I got the new unit a few days later, plugged it in, but the compressor on that one did not work, so they went me my third one, which was about a year ago.Today, the compressor on that one went out.

In addition, there is a very significant design flaw.When you do have to drain the water from the unit, the drain is almost on the bottom of the unit.When you unplug the hole in order to attach the drainage pipe, water leaks (floods) out of the unit.My carpet has been soaked numerous times over the past year.For anyone who does actually buy this unit, I would recommend (1) build a box about 6 inches high which is large/strong enough to place the unit on top of, (2) connect the drainage hose permanently (use duct tape if you have to, that's what I did), (3) place a bucket at the back of the unit and put the other end of the drainage hose into the bucket.This way, the unit can drain continuously and you don't have to worry about it flooding the carpet or floor when you pull out the plug when it is full.Just let it drain continually.

DeLonghi Pinguino PAC260 Portable Air Conditioner - 9000 BTU Review

I too was disapointed by the results that I obtained.I used the PAC260 for almost 8 years, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.I got immediated relief when I turned it on.I got 20-35 degrees of temperature relief and 20-45% humidity releif from this machine.it to 20-30minutes to get this relief.I never used the water in my PAC290 and got this kind of releif.I was told that the PAC260 and the PAC290 as I used it were the same.they clearly are not the same.Another issue that you did not adress which I hope you will address if the air filter provided with the machine.In my old PAC290 the filter would be caked with particles after a week.This one is as clean as th eday I got th emachine installed several days ago.Are you finding this to be the case, I would appreciate knowing your result.It is a great machine, but does not quite live up to the PAC290 that I purchased in 1995.

We were disappointed to find out after purchasing this unit that it takes a long time to cool a room. It's not like a window unit that pumps out frigid air for quick relief. For the 150-square-foot office in our home, it takes 6-8 hours to lower the temperature from the 80s to the low 70s. But none of this machine's slow-cooling characteristics are mentioned in any of the materials.

I've owned and used this model for 2 full summers. LG 12,000 BTU Portable Conditioner / Dehumidifier combo w/ Remote It cools my entire main floor within the expressed limits of the machine with no problem.Its a little large (they all are) and a little loud(again, for all I know they all are)--but during the summer who cares.It has worked without fail and if I could find another new one, I would buy it. I love the remote capability and the window insert since most of our area community covenents do not permit window units that jut out.
I purchased mine from a local big-box hardware store at ($599).

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Review

This is the most terrible piece of electronic/small appliance/ home equipment I have ever had to deal with.The unit is ridiculously heavy, and therefore difficult to move and very frustrating and difficult to position near windows of various heights from the floor.It heats the room as much as it cools, rendering it as "useful" as a fan sucking in air in a window on a hot and humid day.It does this because the pipe that "vents" to the outside radiates heat through itself.The hot part of the A/C unit is still in the room with you, not hanging out the window, and therefore renders the cooling ineffective.

Go to insulate this trash thin plastic pipe, and its fitting cuff teeth that fasten it to the back of the unit snap off.It is poorly built, over-priced, and a frustrating waste of money and time.

The graphical display on the unit takes a thorough re-read of the manual to interpret all its obnoxious symbols for operation.I cannot wait to bring this back and retrieve every wasted nickel spent on it.

My advice to you is to buy a window unit.If you must get a "portable" one, don't buy Amcor.They Amsuck.

I use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.

But I would highly recommend this product.

Purchased a PLM14000-BTU A/C heat unit.
The A/C compressor did not come on.(no cold air) Called Amcor and was told there was nothing wrong with it. "Turn it on and wait for ten minutes" and it would come on. After several ten minute tries, it still did not work.
After three calls to Amcor customer service, I received a case ID number and was told that they would ship me a new one the next day. Ten days later, still no A/C
I called again,and was told that it was not shipped but they did not know why.They would look into it and let me know.A week later, still no responce from Amcor!
Called (6th time)after four weeks and was told they still didn't know why it has not been shiped
At this time, I do not want the unit nor do I want to do any business with Amcor.

I bought this unit to replace a window AC that is no longer allowed in our condo building. The primary purpose is to dehumidify our entire condo (only 850 square feet), so we are using this unit for a space larger than it is designed to cool. But, even so, it works well and it has a phenomenal Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 12.5, so you get 7500 BTU cooling for only 650 watts of power.

To respond to the previous review that rates this unit poorly, I'd like to go over the points that reviewer mentioned from my perspective...

1)drying the air - this unit will take the relative humidity in our condo down more than enough to make a muggy day comfortable indoors. If we turn the unit on early before the heat of the day, it will maintain the temp in our condo as it drys the air, not bad for a unit designed for a small room.

2)it must be drained of water - true, but most of the water it produces is evaporated over the heat exchanger and sent outside. A small amount of residual water is what you must empty and we find the unit will run for several days continuously before emptying is needed. A light indicates when the water tank is full. The drain is very low as the previous reviewer mentioned, so it is helpful to roll the unit to a stair-step so you have some clearance below it for the water to pour out. This is an inconvenience but unless you have trouble bending over, not a difficulty.

3)it has wheels that are small - yes, it may take effort to roll over a carpet (unit is 60 pounds) but no problem on hardwood floors.

4)hard to move, nothing to grip - haven't found this to be a problem. There are handles (one on each side) and anyone who is able to handle the weight should have no problem. No air conditioner is light and compared to wrestling with a window unit this model is a snap to move.

5)poor window exhaust seal - I don't understand this criticism. The unit comes with panels and a pre-cut hole for the exhaust hose. All fit together tightly to make a tight, rattle-free seal with no duct taping required. The panels allow a fit to any size double hung window.

The unit has two squirrel-cage fans, one for cool air, one for exhaust. The noise they produce is from rushing air, not motor noise so there is no annoying hum or buzz. There are only two fan speeds and they don't differ much. If I had my wish I'd want a slower speed available. The amount of air moved is great. I can sit in a chair twenty feet away from the unit in another room and feel the draft, so I use the unit as a fan when the cooling/dehumidifying isn't needed.

The exhaust hose will expand or contract to fit the length you need to reach the window from the back of the unit. There is a quick disconnect that snaps the hose into the unit, so you can quickly disconnect the hose if you need to move the unit for any reason. The hose screws into the plastic fittings at both ends so it won't pull apart on you.

The exhaust air to the outside is hot. As a result the hose will get warm. That warmth adds to room warmth and you don't want that heat in the room. I recommend wrapping some vinyl backed fiberglas insulation around the exhaust hose to keep the exhaust heat from the room you are cooling.

This unit has ONLY an exhaust hose. Without the intake hose of more expensive models, it must take room air and exhaust it outside. This means warm, humid air will be pulled into the room as a result. This lowers the cooling and dehumidifying efficiency but we haven't noticed this to be a problem.

If you are looking for a portable air conditioner/heat pump avoid this product and manufacturer.While the unit is satisfactory when running, once any problems develop that require service outside the warranty period, you may as well junk it.My unit lasted just 14 months and developed a leak that ruined my floor.Considering that I only used the air conditioning function during the summer, it only lasted one cooling season.

There is no local service network to fix even the most minor problem.I suppose that you could ship the unit back as was suggested by Soleusair for repair, but have you ever struggled with boxing and shipping a large unit that weighs 50 or 60 pounds, to say nothing about the premium shipping and repair cost. Consumer Reports says this portable air conditioner is much less efficient than a comparable window unit.It's definitely more expensive than a window air conditioner (probably at least double the cost); you're paying for appearance and convenience, not functionality.(It's easy to disconnect this unit and roll it away into a corner or closet.)

I bought two of these for two rooms with sliding casement windows that posed problems for window units -- and I didn't want to bother with installing and then removing bulky window units every season.One of the rooms is a very large bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, and the Frigidaire portable air conditioner has no problem keeping it cool.Your options for placing the unit are rather limited -- there is a somewhat flexible duct that must be run from the back of the unit to a window (or a hole through an exterior wall), and you also need a nearby electrical outlet, preferably on an isolated circuit.

WindChaser PACRWC 12,000 BTU Remote Controlled Portable Air Conditioner Review

Not sure what's wrong with R. Richardson's unit, but mine works like a charm.We have a 16' x 20' with cathedral ceiling bedroom that we use this in.I previously had a single hose unit and was intrigued by the dual hose design.It definitely cools A LOT faster than my old single hose design.The tubes are an eye-sore, but hey, they're better than a permanent window unit...in my opinion.So far, I have only used the air conditioner, so I cannot comment on how well the heater works.However, the AC unit has NO problem cooling our large room down to a nice 63 degrees.It'll even go to 61, but that's too cool even for us.

My advice to R. Richardson...you either have installed it wrong or have a bum unit.Either way, your experience is probably atypical.
