White 8000 BTU Window A/C Review

For 15 years I've been buying small window units for a home library room. The last unit,a Panasonic was quite nice but unavailable when a replacement was needed so I picked up this Haier with its 3 speeds, digital thermostat and remote control and reasonable price. Install was no problem although the plastic side skirts are very flimsy and could easily be trashed while mounting it.

The PROBLEMS: First, this is the noisiest window unit I've ever had. The fan starts on high so turn to medium or low. Wrong! There is in fact almost no difference in airflow nor noise level from high to low. It roars on no matter what. Impossible to sleep next to this thing. Next I find out the thermostat doesn't really know what the real temperature is so don't count on setting the temp logically. It has to be by trial and error. Further the instructions are impossible on this point. Exact quote: When Ts-1F lesser than Tr lesser than Ts+3F the compressor will cycle for 10'on and 6'off. Yeh,right! and E=MC2 too! Calling Haier for help I belatedly find out their service is next to abominable. Long hold and then they were NO help. So what's not to like? Mine is going back just as soon as I find something else...

This is the worst A/C I have ever seen. First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

Fought like the dickens to get this specific version because only one other on the market has the following:

The other costs hundreds more and is a Friedrich.I rarely turn on the AC and didn't want to spend that much more.AAFeders dot com has these in stock as of May 2010.YesINCORRECTLY SPELLED.Delivery cross country is in just days.THE GREAT
Sometimes just a whisper OF QUIET but it can gurgle a bit like a tiny babbling brook.
When I cleaned up I realize this might be because the foam insulation strips were left off.If I find out I'll let you know in an update.
Heat is constant air sound like a white noise machine and though it feels only lukewarm, it actually will take the room to 86d degrees and roast you like a piglet in no time at all.
Cool feels fantastic, but I'm not having a hot day here yet.

THE NOT SO GREAT
The Fan Speed button on the control panel FAILS in every mode except cool.It operates in LOW ONLY unless I use the REMOTE to select Med and High speed fan activity.

NOT as QUIET as I wanted.At 14ft you don't hear it at all but at 12inches to 3ft it is loud enough to disturb low volume tv watching but it doesn't do any annoying groaning, popping or banging as it cycles.I'm a light sleeper and was able to sleep inches from it.

The picture if you see one where the louvers run the full width of the top of the unit THAT IS NOT RIGHT.That's the 10000BTU unit.This version has the older look with small set of controls top left taking up what would be some of the louver space.

The description says the louvers rotate up and down.Well they do rotate UP and back to neutral but NOT DOWN.

I'll post a pic so you can see.Global Industrial dot com had shown it right but is out of stock and took the listing down altogether.Haven't tested the AUTO feature.If it works well it will be a first for any heating or cooling appliance I've bought to actually have even a reasonably accurate thermostat function.

If you are wondering why I give it such a high rating, it is an inexpensive model at $308-315 (don't pay more than $375) and its annoyances/flaws are easy to deal with.

**MEASURING WINDOW OPENING**
Do notice the image added.The minimum height needed for this model is 16.25 inches and 16.5 would make it easier on your installer.It is not the 15+ stated on some store's tech sheet.

When measuring start ABOVE the lip some window frame have.Don't start down on the sill as the installation manual indicates. I did that and if I didn't have an installer who could reconfig my window the unit would have had to be shipped back!

Don't assume your window can go up where the bottom of the edge of the front most pane lines up with the bottom of the upper pane.You may have stops and other window elements that prevent the lower sash from rising that much.Really push it up all the way then measure, don't assume.

I shoulddisclose that I bought the next sized unit up from this--the xq12L10a--and kept it for a week and returned it for this unit.My complaint with the larger sized unit was that I felt like I was living with a gorrilla or more aptly a Pratt and Whitney jet engine.

The space where the unit is installed is a studio apartment with 11 foot ceilings, so basically whatever unit is purchased for the space is something the occupant is going to be in close proximity to all the time.

For this reason, I took a gamble and decided to replace the unit with this unit, the 10,000 BTU xq10L10a.I found that the high fan setting the xq10L10a is about as noisy as the LOW fan setting of the bigger unit.All other things being equal, I am quite happy with this machine and can report it functions perfectly and gently which is of paramount concern to me.It's not going to be silent, but quite acceptable for a small living space.The unit doesn't rumble or vibrate and the thermostat seems to do a good job.You can hear the compressor with the fan on low, but this is normal for any unit of this design type.

The Friedrich tech support is quite good--you get someone on the phone without an issue, although it's kind of hit or miss depending on who you talk to as with most tech support services.For this sized unit, I have no complaints and think it's a good choice for a compact window unit in it's size range.

Sharp EnergyStar Window Air Conditioner 6,000 BTU Review

I couldn't be more pleased with my Sharp AF-S60FX-A air conditioner. It does an excellent job of cooling a small room, like my 11' x 11' bedroom. Please take note that I said SMALL ROOM. A 5000 or 6000 BTU a/c is the smallest size air conditioner made. It is only suitable for a small room. Kinda logical when you think about it, isn't it? A previous reviewer actually believed that "250 sq ft" nonsense that the manufacturer claimed! Such numbers are always totally bogus. A tiny bit of research would tell anyone that. Isn't that what the internet is for? In my 11' x 17" living room, I have a 8500 BTU a/c. If I lived in a hotter climate, I might need 10000 BTU. But back to my 6000 BTU Sharp. When I sit so that my head is midway between the a/c and a twin window fan the noise is close to being equal in volume. The a/c is a lot lower in frequency but only a little louder. (I only did that for a little while to compare noise levels, you understand. I don't think that would be a very good way to cool the outdoors and reverse global warming. Now if it was a solar powered a/c...) The thermostat goes all the way down to 60 degrees, which I find to be more than cool enough for comfortable sleeping. The remote control works well even if it's not directly in front of the a/c, which is handy. The thermostat is different from my other a/c (also a Sharp, but about 15 years old). It's only a thermostat when you first turn it on or adjust it. After a few seconds, it's a thermometer and tells you the actual temperature in the room. Both go up and down in 2 degree increments. There is no "energy saver" mode. Energy saver means that the fan and compressor both turn off if you press the extra button, instead of just the compressor. I have this energy saver on my living room a/c, but it wakes me up if I try to snooze in my chair. Since fans don't use much electricity compared to the compressor, I don't imagine much energy is saved. This a/c is very energy efficient compared to others. If I ever put an a/c in the back bedroom, I won't hesitate to buy this model.

Friedrich Compact Programmable : CP10E10 10,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

Okay, here goes a somewhat long winded review. I purchased the Friedrich CP10E10 about 2 weeks ago when my old one died. A friend of mine had an older Friedrich model that worked really well and was so quiet that I knew my next air conditioner was definitely going to be a Friedrich. It just may have been a big mistake. You be the judge...

Pros
*Super cooler, can cool down my whole (small) 2 br apt
*Money Saver option- shuts down when selected temperature has been attained
*Comes with installation brackets for your windowsill that make the ac secure to the window
*Excellent service- I had to call the service center for a noise and they were able to come out right away to repair it.
*Energy efficient 10.8 EER

Cons
*Loud compressor(main cooling engine)- it sounds like an engine revving up and actually disturbs my sleep
*Installation is very extremely difficult. believe it. You must slide out the main unit from the chassis (metal sleeve) to remove a styrofoam shipping block. Then install the sleeve in the window and then slide in the main unit.
*A problem with a strange noise had me calling the service center. Why does a new unit require a visit? Apparently the fan is made cheaply and was causing a slight rustling noise. It could happen again is what they told me.
* When I called the service center they said they had been getting many calls about the noise level of this series (CP) of Friedrich air conditioners.

Servicers suggested I buy the more expensive Quietmaster unit. It's $800 or so. Ain't gonna happen. A window ac should not cost that much. Esp since I am a renter.

I think that's enough for now. I will add more on durability as time goes.

Frigidaire FAA062P7A 6,000 BTU MSII Air Conditioner with Mechanical Controls Review

I recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

After running the air conditioner for about two hours (on high), the bedroom will be fairly cool, but I'm not sure how it's doing on humidity. I never see any water dripping outside, but you can hear the water slurping around in the back of the unit.

However, this 6,000 BTU a/c does NOT get the room cold, cold, cold. My bedroom is 12' by 17' with 9' ceilings and while it keeps it comfy, it doesn't make it bitter cold. I like to wake up in the morning with a little frost on the comforter and bluish lips. This unit can't do that. Even if it runs all night on high, max temp, it never gets the room past "comfy cold."

And it's noisy. I don't mind some white noise so I'm able to sleep even when the thing is blaring away but some folks might be disturbed by the loud fan motor.

For the money, it's a good deal and it'll cool down an average-size room but it's very cheaply made. The unit arrives partially disassembled (which surprised me). The top bar and side pleats have to be installed. The styrofoam shipping blocks in the vents are nearly impossible to get out. Ick.

And those accordian pleats on the side can't possibly last more than a couple years. They're thin and light and I was afraid of breaking them whilst doing the install! (Pass the duct tape, please.) The shroud inside the unit (where the cold air blows) is lined with chincy-looking plastic and styrofoam. Short of making it out of corrugated cardboard, I don't believe it'd be possible to make this unit any more cheaply. But if it lasts for a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.

One last note, this has the LOWEST efficiency rating of any unit on the market. You get what you pay for.

I bought three of these units so I could survive the summer, so I guess I've voted with my wallet. They're cheap, loud, chincy-looking and don't cool all that well, but they'll keep me from going stark-raving mad when the temps start to climb.

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out Chassis Review

I purchased this air conditioner for $180.00 new. I used it three times and it just stopped working. There isa circuit breaker on the end of the power supply cord of this unit. It must provide some sort of voltage drop that the unit senses. Anyway, the breaker on the cord didn't just kick, it died. Hence, the unit ceased to function at all. I contacted several part suppliers and the lowest price I found on a replacement cord was $59.00. For that amount I could almost buy a new yet smaller A.C. unit. The price is high, the quality is at the very best, POOR, the parts are outrageous if you can find them, and I will NEVER own another goldstar product. Take my advice and go for a G.E. product.

Goldstar WG1005R 10,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Review

I was surprised to see they are still making this model.I purchased mine in 2005 and still use it to this day.

It is made by LG which makes great products so don't be fooled by the generic Goldstar name.

This A/C is fairly light and is very easy to install.It is rather quiet, I haven't seen an A/C that can match this one in that aspect.

This A/C pumps out some cold air and has the power to go above and beyond its recommended use.This might be a 10000 BTU A/C but has the heart of a 12000 BTU A/C.

I use this as back-up for my LG 15000BTU model in a 500 Square foot room.When my LG reaches a certain room temperature I shut it off and turn this one on.On economode it will maintain the temp in the room and cut the operating noise of my LG to about 1/2.

In the past I used this to solely cool down 2 rooms equalling about 400 square feet.I maintained a 65 degree temp, it took about 2 to 3 hours to reach that goal on high speed but easily maintained it on the economode for the rest of the day.

It is small and fits in windows most A/C's can't, which is a big plus and will keep you from having to go with the stand up models.If I did not damage the side slides this would be in my bedroom and not being used as back up in a smaller window in my living room.

This is perfect for the bedroom or TV room.I have never used this A/C for anything smaller than 400 square feet and can only imagine its efficiently in the smaller room it was designed for.

This is a best buy when it comes to low priced A/C's, it is cheap, light weight and very efficient, you can't go wrong.

I like to have a very quiet window air conditioner for my bedroom.This unit is great - it cools and dehumidifies, but most importantly it is very quiet.There is only a slight change in the decibel level when the compressor is running versus when it is not.If you value quiet in a window air conditioner get this one.I've tried many brands and have been disappointed by most.This one reminds me of my old Panasonic unit - whisper quiet.

Frigidaire FAH126S2T Through-the-Wall 12,000/11,700 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

I purchased the Frigidaire FAH126S2T as a replacement for an old and failing Emerson QuietKool unit that came with our condo.

The unit is a tight fit in the Emerson wall sleeve with no room at the top and barely any on the bottom.The side have about 1/4 inch of clearance.

The instructions ask you to do some work outside the sleeve by installing a provided vent and adjusting the angle of the output.Being a computer guy I did none of this.I did install the supplied foam inserts to give the unit the correct angle for water drainage.Overall the install was easy and took less than 1/2 hour minus some sealing I need to do this weekend.

On the topic of performance this A/C delivers.We have a room with high vaulted ceilings and this quickly cooled it from 82 to 72.The various remote functions are very easy to access, though the remote sensing seems a bit out of place to me.Having to put the remote with line-of-sight to the A/C is not practical in our room.

The unit has the same noise level as the old one.For people who like it quiet it may be a bit too loud even on the slow setting.The compressor does not add much to the noise thankfully, unlike the Emerson.

Haier ESA3125 12,000-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner Review

I bought this unit brand new this year (2010) it now has new freeon in it mandated by the fed Govt.
The new stuff used nowdays has to be ran with higher rpm and compressor pressure. Im saying that because this unit is atad louder than my other window units. Nothing really annoying, but I think its more of the conversion to the new freon than anything, so all new a/c's will be affected. with that said, the a'c gives out good cold air, very nice remote control that has a magnet in it so it sticks on side of the unit or the fridge ect.

Haier ESA3105 10,000-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

This is a poorly made product from a company with virtually no support. After opening the package and preparing for installation, I noticed there were several parts missing. This is a large unti and was sitting in the middle of my living room unable to be installed. I called customer support and told them I needed a solution to the problem right away, their only suggestion was to take it back to the store or wait three weeks for them to ship the part. The person I spoke to was rude and very difficult to understand. Thanks to their poor assembly I had to carry it back down three flights of stairs and return it to the store. I got another unit and I insisted on checking it before I left the store and what a surprise; this one was missing parts as well. Different parts, mind you, so it is unlikely that it was some sort of mechanical error during packing. I finally got one with everything, installed it (which is a nightmare in and of itself) andonly when it was installed did I notice that the aparatus used for opening/closing the vents was not there. This isn't a part you attach yourself, the mechanism for opening and closing the vent was never installed. Spend the extra money and buy a better brand, I will never purchase a Haier appliance again.

I read two reviews for this air conditioner that complained about noise.I purchased the next, newer model, the FAC105P1A, and was hoping the noise problem was fixed, but it wasn't. Not only was it loud in the room where I installed it, but it was also loud in the room next to it and on the floor above. Needless to say I returned it. It wasn't just the noise of the cool air being blown--it had a whining, humming noise that drove us crazy. Stay away from Frigedaire.

I'm a believer in internet shopping and with the high cost of gas we're using it even more.Especially when Amazon offers free shipping and that was a big factor in making this purchase. Plus the amount of information offered about this unit made it appealing and in the end a terrific purchase.This unit is for our 1920s Arts & Crafts style brick home.The carrier who delivered alerted us in advance, let us select the day, and called the day of delivery making it very easy.The packaging was perfect - Frigidaire did a very good job.The instructions are not the best.I wish companies would bring in buyers (people who are not associated with the company or product in any way) and let them struggle with the instructions and learn to create user friendly manuals.Since our house is brick the mounting brackets weren't usable but with some creative thinking we came up with a solution to make it safe and secure.The unit is wonderful, quiet both inside and out and does a great job of cooling.Love the remote and easy to set controls.Would definitely purchase this unit again.
