Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote ControlThis is the worst A/C I have ever seen. First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

Product Description:
With a cooling capacity of 7,800 BTUs, this window air conditioner helps maintain a comfortable living space during the hot and muggy summer months. The unit's easy-to-use electronic controls provide a digital time and temperature display, plus a convenient 24-hour on/off timer--great for cooling the living room right before arriving home from work or for keeping the bedroom at a perfect sleeping temperature then turning off on its own in the morning. Choose from three cool settings and three fan speeds. A full-function remote control comes included for changing the settings from across the room. Other highlights include top-discharge airflow; an Enviro-Clean coil; an electrostatic air filter that reduces the presence of mold, dust, and pollen; ultra-quiet operation; and easy installation with the included quick-snap curtain install kit. Best of all, the appliance has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. All of which means more comfortable indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air ConditionerI bought this sytem thinking it would at least provide some comfort from the Southern Cal heatwave we got durring the summer of 2006. Bottom line, IT DID NOT. The square footage of the top floor of our apartment is approximately 500 square feet. The largest temperature drop was from 91 degreees to 89 degrees at 9:00PM. Even sitting directly in front of the system's fan (approx 10 feet away) did little to cool one person, so forget about cooling a small room. Please look elsewhere if you want a room larger than a small closet cooled.

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out Chassis Review

Goldstar WG8005R 8,000 BTU Room Air Conditioner, Slide-Out ChassisI purchased this air conditioner for $180.00 new. I used it three times and it just stopped working. There isa circuit breaker on the end of the power supply cord of this unit. It must provide some sort of voltage drop that the unit senses. Anyway, the breaker on the cord didn't just kick, it died. Hence, the unit ceased to function at all. I contacted several part suppliers and the lowest price I found on a replacement cord was $59.00. For that amount I could almost buy a new yet smaller A.C. unit. The price is high, the quality is at the very best, POOR, the parts are outrageous if you can find them, and I will NEVER own another goldstar product. Take my advice and go for a G.E. product.

Hyundai Air Conditioner, 5200 BTU Review

Hyundai Air Conditioner, 5200 BTUThis small a/c is being used in a 12 x 16 foot living room (though it is rated for a smaller space). Here in Connecticut, we don't get "Texas-style" heat, but since we live by a lake, the humidity in the summer is normally in the 70-80 percent range. On a few 85-degree days (with the humidity around 75-percent), this little unit not only cooled the living room, but also managed to keep the rest of our 800 sq. ft. cottage relatively comfortable too. Also, I just received our electric bill for the month of August. Fearing the worst (I had this unit running constantly from 7 am until 9 pm every day for the first three weeks of August), I was actually pleasantly surprised. It used only a relatively small amount of electricity! It also reduced the relative humidity from ambient to around 48-percent, which is in itself, very impressive. I like the knobs for controls- as opposed to the electronic controls (just one more expensive thing to fix). My only criticism is that the "weeping holes" which allow the water to drip outside are not big enough. After a few hours, the fan housing becomes engulfed in water, which the fan then picks up and throws onto the upper part of the window. A small complaint really, but not enough to pass this gem up! When I take this unit out of the window in the fall, I will get my drill and open up the holes a little more. FYI: This unit is somewhat quieter than most, but not totally silent. The compressor and fan do make some noise, but we just turn up the TV a little bit louder to compensate. Overall: 5-stars and then some. Love it!!!

Frigidaire FAA055P7A Compact Small-Room Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Frigidaire FAA055P7A Compact Small-Room Air Conditioner with Remote ControlThis is an excellent high-efficiency budget air conditioner for small to medium sized rooms. The fan speed is adjustable so that the unit can push cold air further into a room at higher speed.

I really like all the options available in the controls. You can have it run as long as you want, or you can set it to run on an internal timer or according to an internal thermostat.

The on/off button is easy to use and the whole control panel responds well to presses. I don't feel ignored by this control panel.

In addition to setting the fan speed, you can set the thermostat from 60 up to 90, or you can set the unit to run the fan only, without cooling the air.

Also, there is an energy efficient mode which turns off the cooling system when the thermostat reads the right temperature, but the fan keeps running for 3 minutes, to continue moving air over the inactive but still-cold compressor. Then at 10 minute intervals the fan turns on for another 3 minutes and continues like that until the temperature goes high enough to activate the compressor again.

There is Clean Air button that turns on a little electric air purifier in the unit. A good bonus for allergy sufferers which I keep on all the time.

There is a sleep button that works with the thermostat settings. When the sleep button is pressed, the unit continues operating. 30 minutes later, the thermostat is set 2 degrees higher. 30 minutes after that again, it is set another 2 degrees higher, so it is more efficient while you sleep. The unit will then operate with the thermostat at that higher level for 7 hours, and then turn off sleep mode automatically, returning to the original thermostat setting, before the sleep button was pressed. I don't know anyone who sleeps a full 8 hours, so the sleep mode can be deactivated with the press of the button.

The unit reminds you when to change the filter by turning on a light. The reusable filter can be rinsed clean, and the button under the filter light can be pushed to reset the timer, which runs for 250 hours of operation before lighting again.

There are two control features that I don't like so well.

First, there is the mode selection button, which controls which of the three modes you are in: "Cool", "Energy Saver", and "Fan Only". I would have preferred two buttons, to go up or down the list, instead of only down. It's a minor pet peeve for me.

Second, I think the controls beep too loud when pressed, and I don't think there is a way to adjust volume.

Another thing I dislike is how the timer can only be set in half-hour increments up to 10 hours, and then 1 hour increments up to 24 hours. I would have liked to select smaller time slices, like 10 minute intervals. That makes it a longer process to program the timer, but gives me more control. However, since I normally use the thermostat mode, this is not really an issue for me anyway.

Be careful about putting furniture directly in front of the plug. The plug itself looks good and the cord comes out the bottom, but the reset and test buttons are not placed deeply enough into the plug box, so they can be accidentally pushed. This may turn off your unit, and the instructions say not to use the test and reset buttons to control the operation of the unit.

The unit seems to generate an average amount of sound. It does not sound any louder or quieter than an average air conditioner.

Product Description:
Designed for rooms up to 165 square feet, this energy-efficient compact air conditioner helps keep indoor air cool in the summer. Easy to operate, the unit provides a variable speed fan, eight-way air-direction control, and electronic controls with a full-function remote control for convenient programming. Choose from Cool, Energy Saver, and Fan modes. The air conditioner will automatically maintain the selected temperature ranging from 60 and 90 degrees F. In Energy Saver mode, the compressor shuts off as needed and the fan continues to run intermittently; when the room heats up past the set temperature, the compressor turns back on and begins cooling again. Choose the "fan only" option for air circulation without cooling. The air conditioner also offers auto-cool and sleep settings, a 24-hour on/off timer, and ionizer/electrostatic air filtration for cleaner air that allergy suffers will be sure to appreciate.
Other highlights include tilt-out filter access, LVC Technology (Low Voltage Compensation) to ensure proper operation when voltage fluctuates below normal levels, and a user manual that details several ideas for saving money and energy. The unit features an EER of 11 and an Energy Star rating thanks in part to its 5200-BTU cooling capacity. Choosing Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as on greenhouse gas emissions. All of which means cooler indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. A pleated quick-mount window kit comes included for installation; the width of the open window should measure between 23 and 36 inches with a minimum height of 14 inches. The air conditioner weighs about 46 pounds, measures 14 (15-1/2 with the front) by 18-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches, and carries a full one-year warranty with a five-year limited warranty on the sealed system.
