16" Evaporative Cooler Direct Drive Variable Speed With Tank Cart Review

16' Evaporative Cooler Direct Drive Variable Speed With Tank CartMy shop is located in the SE part of the country so heat and humidity are a real problem, especially when working outdoors.
While looking for a solution, I started to wonder if the "swamp coolers" I saw on the side lines at football games might be the ticket.I was skeptical, due to the fact that the inherent high humidity would diminish the evaporative cooling that enables these devices to work.Still I saw these things everywhere, so I was interested. After a little researchI found that the current models overcome a lot of the evaporative cooling/humidity issue via modern design.
My hopes were dashed when I started pricing these coolers, BIG BUCKS!I could install a separate AC system for the same price. Then by "divine intervention", I saw a portable version, when I walked into my local NAPA store. The salesman told me the way they market these coolers, is to drop them off at local garages during the day and then pick them up after it gets hot.Once people see the difference they make, they're sold.I was sold too when I got a great deal on the end of season model.
I'm impressed with the Port-a-Cool.Temps have only been in the 80's with low humidity, but the cooling is noticeable. The fan is big enough to make a "breeze" even sitting on the driveway. It's easy to move around can be used during any outdoor activity. So far this has been a great and cost effective cooling solution.
Tip:Add ice to the reservoir for even greater cooling effect.

Danby DPAC120061 12,000 BTU 3-in-1 Portable Comfort System Review

Danby DPAC120061 12,000 BTU 3-in-1 Portable Comfort SystemI've owned one of the Danby 12,000 BTU air conditioners (model DPAC 12030) for two years now. A unit of this size struggles to cool a 400 sq.ft. room a few degrees (with 30ÂșC outside, window curtains drawn). I find the best way to use it is to have the air blowing directly toward me.

My main complaints about the unit are:

* After a few months of use the small LED display, which is needed to operate the unit, slowly went dim to the point of not being able to read it. After many phone calls to Danby I was finally able to get the display replaced under warranty by a local electronics service company. But a few months later the display went dim again - as though Danby hadn't bothered to upgrade this obviously faulty component. To their credit, Danby agreed to replace the display one more time out of warranty.

* The air coming out of the unit had a strange smell of oil for the first season. The service company said that sometimes the compressor leaks oil and it was probably the smell of the oil burning off of the compressor housing.

* The unit is not real quiet. For the first year there was a rattling noise that occurred when the compressor kicked in, but this noise seems to have gone now.

This Evaporative Air Cooler, Humidifier, and Fan with Ionizer is versatile, lightweight and economical. The Cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. This Air Cooler shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air. Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue. - plus get the air cleaning benefits of the ionic air purifier. The remote control allows you to easily change settings.

TheAir Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy.

Note: The unit works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool.

Symphony S-Hi-Cool Portable Swamp Cooler Features 200 Sq. Ft. Coverage Area Review

Symphony S-Hi-Cool Portable Swamp Cooler Features 200 Sq. Ft. Coverage AreaI wanted to put an evap cooler in our upstairs bedroom but the window where it would go was too narrow.I checked all the reviews and descriptions I could find on several different web sites and decided to go for this portable unit. It has large water capacity, easy to move, can use as a fan only, add ice for real cool air, easy to add water, is quiet enough we left it on one night while we slept.Fan force good, it really moves the air on "high".Haven't emptied it yet, we have had 100 degree weather so it has been on every day. The "humidity" controller basically just determines how much water flows over the filters. The unit does not cool the room like a window evap unit would, but I do recommend it to take the temperature down 15-20 degrees.I am very glad I purchased this product and if I needed another cooler I would get this one again. It actually isn't too bad to look at either.

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTUFor what it's worth, a certain store with the intitials 'HD' will take back anything, even after a year.We bought this from '*ears' (if you know what I mean) and I am sure they could care less about anything 13 mos. out from the warranty period. Here's my review.

I bought 2 Royal Soverign a/c units, 12,000 BTU from Sears in 6/08.We haven't used them a whole lot. Ours are tan with a black exhaust area/top. Models ARP 3012. We paid $599 each.

We left for the day and like we always do, turn the a/c to a lower setting.A family member had stopped over and I had her check to make sure the a/c was on. She said the unit upstairs was off.I thought that was odd, as I had left it on.When she turned it on, it sounded like 100 forks in a garbage disposal.I could hear it over the phone. Apparently, due to the issue, the unit was over-heating and then turning itself off.We are lucky the house didn't burn down.

When we got home we looked into the issue and after removing the tubing from the unit, we instantly found shards of cheap black plastic. Some parts looked tube like.We removed the 14 screws on the back, cleaned up the broken plastic laying inside the unit (we thought it was part of the exhaust) and thinking everything was fine (but were were still going to look into what that tubing was for) and we put the back of the unit back on and we turned it on.More horrible breaking of plastic sounds and then more plastic was sucked into the tubing. We're thinking that the case that surrounds the fan blade and compressor is breaking up. We are sure that this will eventually happen with our 2nd unit.I would not buy a Royal Soverign brand. I'll check back and give an update when I can as we have plans to drop it off at a service location. The compressor is covered for 5 years. We will not be paying a dime to have this fixed!

Amcor PLM12000E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Amcor PLM12000E 12,000-BTU Portable Air ConditionerWe bought an Amcor 12000EH unit (heat, A/C, dehumidifier and fan) back in April 2006.We were so pleased with its ability to supplement the unreliable cooling and ventilation of the administrative area of our office (4 computers, several printers, huge copier, fax machine, etc. all generating heat around the clock) that we ordered a second unit for my office.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that the description of this unit clearly indicated (and STILL does) that the heater function was included, it was NOT on the unit shipped to us by Target.Their customer service apparently could not adequately comprehend that we want the unit as described (heat, A/C, dehumidifier and fan) and, when we returned the unit, they shipped us an IDENTICAL system in a sooty, dirty box.

We canceled our order, returned BOTH units to Target and acquired an Amcor 12000EH elsewhere.

As for this 12000EH portable air conditioner with heat, dehumidifier and fan, we are VERY happy with the unit.I would not rely on it to adequately cool a very large space (its suggested for up to 400 square feet), but it is extremely well suited as a supplement for our large space where it will be 66 to 68 degrees one day and 85 degrees the next.

During a recent cooling tower malfunction that lasted for several days, the unit had to be DRAINED of collected humidity five times in a little more than 24 hours.HOWEVER, since that HVAC situation was resolved for the building, the humidity levels in here have gone back to normal ranges and we haven't had to drain the unit in the past week or so (which was our experience before the cooling tower situation arose).

We got the drop ceiling kit for these two units and both portable AC units are vented into the space above our ceiling.Alternatively, the units include a 5' vent hose and a kit for venting the unit out a nearby window.

Overall, we're VERY happy with our units. We don't pay the electric bill in our office, so I can't say what impact they have had on our energy consumption. But I can definitely give these units credit for keeping our "sealed" office (no windows which can be opened) habitable in some pretty icky conditions.

Product Description:
Ideal for average-size rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity. During the cooling process, its self evaporating technology extracts water from the air that passes through the unit. Most of this water then works to help cool the machine for more efficient operation. Approximately 65 to 70 percent of water condensed evaporates out with the exhaust air, reducing the hassle of constantly having to empty the water tank. For the small amount of remaining water, the unit provides a built-in water tank with a drain outlet and a water tube. When the tank fills, the compressor stops operating and the power light will flash to indicate that the tank should be emptied.
The air conditioner also comes equipped with two fan speeds for fast or normal cooling, full thermostat control, a digital temperature display, and electronic controls with a handy remote control. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. Other highlights include a 62- to 90-degree F thermostat, moisture removal of 65 pints per day, a washable air filter, and an activated carbon filter, as well as adjustable louvers to control air flow, built-in casters, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). A window and wall exhaust kit comes included, and the air conditioner must be vented via the included exhaust hose. Please note, if the room has a heat source such as direct sunlight or computer servers, the coverage area may be reduced. Weighing 68 pounds, the air conditioner measures 16 by 15 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty and a five-year warranty on the compressor.

MovinCool Office Pro 60 60,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With Electronic Thermostat Control Review

MovinCool Office Pro 60 60,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With Electronic Thermostat ControlAt some point, anyone with a server room will experience overheating problems. Whether it's caused by building cooling failure, or by overtaxing the air handling system to your server room, heat will be the source of trouble at some point in your server room operations.

I should clarify what I mean by "server room". I am not referring to data centers, which are specifically designed to house hundreds or even thousands of high heat generating server racks, with raised floors, sub-floor cooling systems, large UPS rooms, and days worth of backup generator power. In this case "server room" refers to a dedicated room in a small or medium sized business, where anywhere from one to about five server racks house the data servers for the business's computer operations. (e.g. Law Offices, Insurance Companies, Security Firms, Software Developers, etc.)

For many small businesses, the idea of a server room is an unplanned necessity, resulting from the realization that the receptionist's computer is no longer a sufficient data server for the entire office. When server rooms are set up in existing office space, as most are, they are usually provided the same amount of cooling as the "people space." The problem is that servers produce much more heat than people in an office.

Enter the Movincool Office Pro 60 Portable Air Conditioner. This unit provides five cooling tons of air conditioning to these undercooled areas. While it's not as easy to set up as the manufacturer claims, it's still a very reasonable option. Movincool makes it sound like you just roll it in, plug it in, and you're ready to go. In reality, it's a little bit more involved than that. Specifically, you need to have a dedicated 50 amp, 230 volt circuit available for this unit. It does not plug into a normal outlet. Depending on the location of your power panel and your relationship with your local electrical contractor, installing the dedicated circuit and outlet can cost as little as a $150, to well over $1000.

Another issue to take into consideration is that this unit, like all refrigeration units, produces condense water that needs to be drained. The Movincool handles this very well. It has a built-in condensate pump that will pump the condense water out of the unit, through the included 25' drain hose. This allows you to drain the water into a drain above the level of the A/C unit itself, such as a kitchen or bathroom sink, or even outside, through a wall.

After power and water drain issues have been addressed, the next important consideration is the venting the unit. Air conditioners pump heat from one source to another, in this case air to air. While you have ice cold air blasting out of the front of the unit, you also have hot air billowing up from the top of the unit. An air duct mounts to the top to carry this hot air out and away, usually into the building air return system above your ceiling tiles. (There is even a ceiling tile adapter for the air duct.) The air that blows out of the top of the unit is pulled in from the side, thereby drawing out conditioned room air and replacing it with air from the surrounding office area. If this isn't a problem in your case, don't worry about it. If you have a sealed room that can't readily replace air being pulled out of it, Movincool makes an adapter that allows you to hook up another air duct from the building supply air (cooling register) to the air intake on the side of the unit. Problem solved.

Lastly, remember to take size into consideration. It's hard to get a perspective of the size of this unit from pictures. It's not like those little home units that are only a little bit bigger than a paper shredder. This unit is 30" wide, by 52" long, by 64" high, more like an entertainment center than an air conditioner. If you need to use the air intake adapter on the side, add about another 24" to the width, just to be safe.

While these four considerations definitely need some planning, it's still a very feasible installation, even on short notice; not to mention much cheaper than a permanent installation. Best of all, if you are in leased office space, you can take your investment with you when you decide to move to a new location. Overall, this unit is a great investment.

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air ConditionerI bought this sytem thinking it would at least provide some comfort from the Southern Cal heatwave we got durring the summer of 2006. Bottom line, IT DID NOT. The square footage of the top floor of our apartment is approximately 500 square feet. The largest temperature drop was from 91 degreees to 89 degrees at 9:00PM. Even sitting directly in front of the system's fan (approx 10 feet away) did little to cool one person, so forget about cooling a small room. Please look elsewhere if you want a room larger than a small closet cooled.

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Review

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with HeatThis is the most terrible piece of electronic/small appliance/ home equipment I have ever had to deal with. The unit is ridiculously heavy, and therefore difficult to move and very frustrating and difficult to position near windows of various heights from the floor. It heats the room as much as it cools, rendering it as "useful" as a fan sucking in air in a window on a hot and humid day.It does this because the pipe that "vents" to the outside radiates heat through itself. The hot part of the A/C unit is still in the room with you, not hanging out the window, and therefore renders the cooling ineffective.

Go to insulate this trash thin plastic pipe, and its fitting cuff teeth that fasten it to the back of the unit snap off.It is poorly built, over-priced, and a frustrating waste of money and time.

The graphical display on the unit takes a thorough re-read of the manual to interpret all its obnoxious symbols for operation.I cannot wait to bring this back and retrieve every wasted nickel spent on it.

My advice to you is to buy a window unit.If you must get a "portable" one, don't buy Amcor. They Amsuck.

Sunpentown Air Cooler with Ionizer Review

Sunpentown Air Cooler with Ionizerbut not cool air.Doesn't really make much difference the temperature of the water or how much ice (yes, ice) you add, it doesn't do much to cool the air temperature.Dropped the temperature a whopping 1.3 degrees F in my first test (from 85.3 degrees to 84 degrees), and 0.9 degrees F in my second test.Don't bother.

Soleus LX-100 10,000-BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control SOURCE: Amazon.com Product Description Review

Soleus LX-100 10,000-BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control SOURCE: Amazon.com Product DescriptionI use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ÂșF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ÂșF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ÂșF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ÂșF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.

But I would highly recommend this product.

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote Control Review

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote ControlUPDATE 5/5/2010: This unit is still running as efficiently and effectively as ever. We are very, very happy with our purchase.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at our local Costco (because of good pricing and their great return policy) after researching and reading mixed online reviews on MANY, MANY portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're currently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA near L.A.) right on the ocean and the humidity is pretty high. We've used it on days with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are still waiting for a really hot day to hit. It might not happen this year, but it certainly did last year. We use it in our upstairs bedroom--approximately 180 square feet--with the door shut to keep our cats out.

The results:

* Noise: Fantastic. We used to have one fan blowing on full-speed in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan was, by probably 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a little water trickling from time to time, but that doesn't really bother us, and it's certainly not constant. We sleep like babies with this unit about a foot away from the bed.

* Cooling: Again, top-notch. I really wasn't expecting much from a portable after reading so many bad reviews for all of the portable air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it was 83F outside (and probably close to 90F in our bedroom) and, being pessimistic in our expectations, we put it on the MegaCool setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2 hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse (approximately 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had already dropped a good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a few more hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--better than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what felt like near 50F is very reasonable. Since then, we've kept it between 67F and 70F.

* Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the battery life.

* Dehumidifying: It's unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the air here. Remember, we live right on the ocean, so it's always very humid. I LOVE that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and that my husband and I can sleep touching without sticking to each other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is really wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified bedroom, it gets very close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair immediately starts curling. My husband tends to laugh at how quickly the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I never had this experience with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It dehumidifies REALLY well.

* Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and probably could have gotten away with doing it once. A lot of the water evaporates right out of the window, and the tank seems to have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if the tank gets too full. The method is also pretty easy. The drain is far enough off the floor that you can use a bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even though it has an on/off valve, the off position doesn't seem to work. We have to make sure the stopper is in securely no matter what setting the valve is on.

* Construction: Seems to be quite durable, but not overly heavy. My husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was definitely heavy, but it was doable (I'm 6', average to above-average strength for a woman, and not too concerned about breaking a nail, though). Once out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.

* Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and not perfectly written, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to assemble most of the unit without them if you have a decent amount of common sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any better. From my research, they all use similar methods, so I can't really complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is designed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece needs to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a slight problem with this because we have windows that open horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or wooden--it's recessed and metal. We ended up having to make a workaround--some measuring and a quick trip to the local lumber yard, and we had a few plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something solid, the other braces the sliding part of the window up against the unit. A bit of a pain, but not too bad nor too ugly.

* Other features: The adjustable louvers work very well. We like to point them up at the ceiling while we sleep, giving nice cool air and great circulation without freezing us out. The Plasmacluster functionality is nice, but when it's on, the unit shows a very BRIGHT blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run Plasmacluster at night--you may need to find a way to cover the light up. [EDIT 5/5/2010: We have since discovered the nifty "Lights" button on the remote control. This turns off the lights on the unit without making you turn off the Plasmacluster functionality, so no worries there any more.]

All in all, we're both so glad we bought this unit. We were mulling over whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought for a few months. We agree that we should have just gone ahead and done it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been much more bearable, and we would have been much better rested!!

Amcor ALD12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Heater Review

Amcor ALD12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and HeaterOver the years, we've acquired SIX of these units for our hermetically sealed offices. We have no windows that can be opened and the building temperature will vary from 63 degrees to 85 degrees from one day to the next. We're on the 5th floor and have nowhere to vent units to the outside.Yes, these units have 4" discharge hoses that need to vent away from the space being heated or cooled but we solved the problem by installing venting into the dropped ceilings and the hot air or cold air being discharged by the units goes into the space above the ceiling panels. Not a perfect solution, but it works well to make the office work space tolerable when the building HVAC system goes haywire.

I've found these units to be relatively quiet and very efficient.Because they are multi-purpose (heat, air conditioner, fan and dehumidifier), they are useful year round. We'd just be miserable without them.YES, you do have to drain the units if your space is extremely humid but it's not a huge hassle. We generally only have to do this occasionally when the building humidity level jumps unusually high.

I heartily recommend the Amcor 12,000 BTU portable air conditioners for supplemental climate control.

Product Description:
Ideal for average-size rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling and heating capacity.
The air conditioner also comes equipped with two fan speeds for fast or normal cooling, a digital temperature display, full thermostat control, and electronic controls with a handy remote control.

Soleus Air MAC-12 12,000 BTU Evaporative Portable AC/Dehumidifier/Heater and Fan with Remote Review

Soleus Air MAC-12 12,000 BTU Evaporative Portable AC/Dehumidifier/Heater and Fan with RemoteI didn't buy the soleus mac12K at amazon but rather from a retail outlet here in southern CA.After being disappointed with an earlier purchase that I made online, I decided to go into a brick and mortar store and ask the relevent questions.

I was told by the salesman that the reason that the previous air conditioner doesn't work was becuase of the single hose exhuast. The soleus, with it's dual hose design and 12000 btu of cooling power would make my 170 sq ft room freeze. That turned out to be an outright lie.

I started out by testing the air conditioner in the living room with a sliding door. The unit worked well for the first few minutes, cooling the room from about 90 to 87 degrees. Then the compressor would stop running and the cooling mode acted like fan mode and started heating the room back to over 90 degrees.I would be able to get the compressor to work again by unplugging the ac plug and then starting the ac again. The same problem repeated.

Then I moved the air conditioner into the kitchen. It was about 95 degrees to begin with and it only got to 92 and did not drop even after an hour. There were no problems here with the compressor turning off for no reason.

Then I moved the air condtioner into the bedroom. It was able to cool the room down only a few degrees.Besides being loud, it also takes up a lot of current, 12A to be exact and 1350W of power. This would repeatedly trip up the circuit breaker if other appliances such as iron or computers were to be used that were on the same circuit.

The air conditioner appeared to work better when the outside temperature was below 80 degrees. But even then, it does not cool the room below 72.But with the outside temperature in the mid to upper 90s, the room would be in the mid to upper 80s.About the only thing that worked as advertised was that there was no bucket to empty.

I ended up returning the unit after a week with a 25% restocking fee.I was offered an exchange but didnt' even bother.

Soleus LX-140 14,000 BTU Portable Evaporative Air Conditioner With Heat Pump Review

Soleus LX-140 14,000 BTU Portable Evaporative Air Conditioner With Heat PumpIf you are looking for a portable air conditioner/heat pump avoid this product and manufacturer. While the unit is satisfactory when running, once any problems develop that require service outside the warranty period, you may as well junk it.My unit lasted just 14 months and developed a leak that ruined my floor.Considering that I only used the air conditioning function during the summer, it only lasted one cooling season.

There is no local service network to fix even the most minor problem.I suppose that you could ship the unit back as was suggested by Soleusair for repair, but have you ever struggled with boxing and shipping a large unit that weighs 50 or 60 pounds, to say nothing about the premium shipping and repair cost. It is cheaply made and unreliable
