Friedrich KS15L10 QuietMaster R : KS15L10 Review

Friedrich KS15L10 QuietMaster R : KS15L10this is your unit! I like it like a meat locker in my bedroom, and this unit does the trick. I had intially bought a Kenmore 12,000 BTU based on Consumer Reports and found that it blew cool air, and was quiet, but I wanted cold, icy-like air. I live in South Texas as well and have been suffering the worst heat wave and drought in history. This unit allows me to leave my house set at 79 at night, but be curled up under the covers in a very cold room at night. If I were to leave it on it would probably cool into the hall and my den. For anyone worried about noise, it runs very quietly, although I do like a little background "white noise" at night. My only other advice would be to shop around for prices...I got mine for just under $600.00.

LG 12,000 BTU Portable Conditioner / Dehumidifier combo w/ Remote Review

LG 12,000 BTU Portable Conditioner / Dehumidifier combo w/ RemoteI've owned and used this model for 2 full summers. LG 12,000 BTU Portable Conditioner / Dehumidifier combo w/ Remote It cools my entire main floor within the expressed limits of the machine with no problem. Its a little large (they all are) and a little loud(again, for all I know they all are)--but during the summer who cares. It has worked without fail and if I could find another new one, I would buy it. I love the remote capability and the window insert since most of our area community covenents do not permit window units that jut out.
I purchased mine from a local big-box hardware store at ($599).

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air ConditionerI bought this sytem thinking it would at least provide some comfort from the Southern Cal heatwave we got durring the summer of 2006. Bottom line, IT DID NOT. The square footage of the top floor of our apartment is approximately 500 square feet. The largest temperature drop was from 91 degreees to 89 degrees at 9:00PM. Even sitting directly in front of the system's fan (approx 10 feet away) did little to cool one person, so forget about cooling a small room. Please look elsewhere if you want a room larger than a small closet cooled.

SPT AC-7013 Magic Clean Air Cleaner with Photo-Catalytic Oxidation Device and Ionizer Review

SPT AC-7013 Magic Clean Air Cleaner with Photo-Catalytic Oxidation Device and IonizerI wanted a PCO air purifier to have in my office, but this was too rinkydink for my tastes.I has four light-emitting diodes, one in each corner.I've seen small PCO filters that were made for use in a car that used LEDS, but for the space this fan takes up, I think it is way under lit.It seemed to add more odor to the room from its own off-gassing than it cleared up.I ran it for about two hours. It was very quiet on low speed at first, but then it started making a scraping/bearing noise.I sent it back and will try the NanoBreeze next.I don't have anything against Sunpentown.I have a humidifier and a portable air conditioner from them that I am very happy with. The PCO fan was unacceptable.

Features latest technology in air cleaning: TiO2 (photo-catalyst titanium dioxide) + UV light: when TiO2 captures UV light, it forms activated oxygen from water or oxygen in the air. This process is similar to photosynthesis, in which chlorophyll captures sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose. The formed activated oxygen is strong enough to oxidize and decompose organic materials or smelling gas, and kill bacteria.

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Review

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with HeatThis is the most terrible piece of electronic/small appliance/ home equipment I have ever had to deal with. The unit is ridiculously heavy, and therefore difficult to move and very frustrating and difficult to position near windows of various heights from the floor. It heats the room as much as it cools, rendering it as "useful" as a fan sucking in air in a window on a hot and humid day.It does this because the pipe that "vents" to the outside radiates heat through itself. The hot part of the A/C unit is still in the room with you, not hanging out the window, and therefore renders the cooling ineffective.

Go to insulate this trash thin plastic pipe, and its fitting cuff teeth that fasten it to the back of the unit snap off.It is poorly built, over-priced, and a frustrating waste of money and time.

The graphical display on the unit takes a thorough re-read of the manual to interpret all its obnoxious symbols for operation.I cannot wait to bring this back and retrieve every wasted nickel spent on it.

My advice to you is to buy a window unit.If you must get a "portable" one, don't buy Amcor. They Amsuck.

Product Description:
Ideal for average-size rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling and heating capacity. During the cooling process, its self evaporating technology extracts water from the air that passes through the unit. Most of this water then works to help cool the machine for more efficient operation. Approximately 65 to 70 percent of water condensed evaporates out with the exhaust air, reducing the hassle of constantly having to empty the water tank. For the small amount of remaining water, the unit provides a built-in water tank with a drain outlet and a water tube. When the tank fills, the compressor stops operating and the power light will flash to indicate that the tank should be emptied.
The air conditioner also comes equipped with two fan speeds for fast or normal cooling, an LCD digital temperature display, full thermostat control, and electronic controls with a remote control. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. Other highlights include a 62- to 90-degree F thermostat, moisture removal of 65 pints per day, a washable air filter, and an activated carbon filter, as well as adjustable louvers to control air flow, built-in casters for convenient mobility, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). A window and wall exhaust kit comes included, and the air conditioner must be vented via the included exhaust hose. Please note, if the room has a heat source such as direct sunlight or computer servers, the coverage area may be reduced. Weighing 68 pounds, the air conditioner measures 16 by 15 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty and a five-year warranty on the compressor.

Sunpentown Air Cooler with Ionizer Review

Sunpentown Air Cooler with Ionizerbut not cool air.Doesn't really make much difference the temperature of the water or how much ice (yes, ice) you add, it doesn't do much to cool the air temperature.Dropped the temperature a whopping 1.3 degrees F in my first test (from 85.3 degrees to 84 degrees), and 0.9 degrees F in my second test.Don't bother.

Product Description:
This Evaporative Air Cooler, Humidifier, and Fan with Ionizer is versatile, lightweight and economical. The Cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. This Air Cooler shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air. Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue. - plus get the air cleaning benefits of the ionic air purifier. The remote control allows you to easily change settings. The Air Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy.SF-609

Kenwood KW85 Portable Air Conditioner - 8500 BTU Review

Kenwood KW85 Portable Air Conditioner - 8500 BTUIf only this gorgeous looking air conditioner could really cool a room!! I am so in love with the stunning sleek design and shiny bright white color. Very simple and professional looking. Sturdy build. Not cheap looking, like others I have seen at Home Depot and Sam's Club.

I bought this for my apartment. It has 8500 BTU. I planned to use it in the living room (13x15 or 208 square feet) during the day, and then the bedroom at night (a bit smaller). I opened the package immediately the night I brought it home, but once I turned the power on for the first time, I was surprised that high power, turned to be little more than a feeble blowing of air. This weak fan, does not allow any of the cold air to actually push out of the unit and cool the room!!! Even if you stood 2 feet from it, it barely blew on you!!! Who would engineer such a thing?

The real test was the next day, when temperatures outside soared to 93 degrees. My unit could not manage to make the room cooler than 88 degrees for the entire day!

So disappointing that such a sleek looking and digital panneled portable a/c could disappoint like this. I read the entire manual, hooked it up properly and even called the company, Kenwood. Kenwood didn't really care. They told me it is discontinued and to just return it!! Strange that customer service was so lackadaisical and uncommitted.

With all the terribly ugly looking portable units out there, I had really wanted this to be my new a/c, but I will have to look elsewhere, and this time for something having perhaps 12000 BTU and a fan that blows like a tornado! Please, someone, design a beautiful looking portable a/c for far under $600 that works! What a pain. I hate the thought of lugging this 80 plus pound machine back to the store.

Amcor 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Amcor 12,000 BTU Portable Air ConditionerGreat in what the company says it does, but be prepared for the noise. Most of the noise appears to be produced by the fan which blows very strongly.Inexplicably, it seems there are only two fan settings:stronger and strongest.Engineering to avoid noise producing turbulent flow may also help. The grills of my two units also do not turn down due to poor fitting, either a design flaw or a production error.

On the other hand, customer service is great! The vinyl window kits did not fit my narrow windows, and they quickly sent me the foam ones for free.

Soleus LX-100 10,000-BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control SOURCE: Amazon.com Product Description Review

Soleus LX-100 10,000-BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control SOURCE: Amazon.com Product DescriptionI use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.

But I would highly recommend this product.

12,000 BTU Mid-Size Room Air Conditioner Review

12,000 BTU Mid-Size Room Air ConditionerBought it for a room of approximately 700 square feet. Installation was straightforward and took about 1 hour. Unit is heavy so I would definitely recommend having a second person to help. Product Description:
Designed by expert engineers to meet the needs of allergic and asthmatic individuals, AllerTech Furnace and Air Conditioner Filters use the most efficient methods to trap and hold allergens. Our exclusive disposable filters are superior to both electrostatic and pleated filters.
Our Three-Stage Design filters become even more efficient over time, capturing smaller and smaller particles. Other types of filters lose their efficiency as they get dirty and unload particles that they have collected back into the air.
Our No-Leak Edges create a self-seal that directs the air through the filter for 100% filtration. Other types of filters have cardboard or hard metal edges that allow dirty air to pass by unfiltered.
AllerTech Furnace and Air Conditioner Filters are easy to install and require no maintenance or messy cleaning. Sold in boxes of four for a minimum 12-month supply.

Plasma Cool PC-14E Portable Air Conditioner Review

Plasma Cool PC-14E Portable Air ConditionerI bought this machine from a local Oreck where I live. It was being advertised for sale long before their stock arrived in the store. I ordered it in spring of 2009 and the machine didn't arrive until nearly the end of July 2009. I used the machine for less than 2 months. At the end of the season I followed the storage instructions (drained the unit, cleaned the filter, unplugged the machine).

When I started it up in April 2010, the machine made a horrid sluggish, grinding noise, similar to that of a dishwasher that hasn't been used in awhile.Turned out that it only made that noise when the cooling function was on, not when it was just set to straight fan. They do not offer in home service and you are expected to drag the machine to their shop for service. Not easy to do if you are a girl who isn't strong, doesn't drive and doesn't have anyone to help you do that.

After 2 weeks and one night of just leaving it run loudly until it either blew up or stopped making noise, I left it running. It stopped making noise and seemingly worked well.

Two days later I come home to a flood in my living room. My entire 5 x 8 foot area rug was completely saturated with water as was my hard wood floor!

The drain plug on these machines is in a really awkward place. It's at the back about 1 inch from the floor. Since this machine is not supposed to collect water, there is no door that you can open to simply empty a bucket. And the little container that they do give you to catch the few "drops" of water that may be left in the unit after this "Nano Misty Technology" was useless because it is created to lay down on the ground. There must have been a gallon of water in the machine. I ended up having to put heavy towels under the drain and catch the water coming out that way.

I had to take 1/2 day off of work (unpaid time). They came and exchanged it with another one.The one I received was not in a box, so I don't know if it was new or a show room model, or a refurbished model that was returned. It is a bit dinged up in some spots, so I have to wonder.

The "new" machine was delivered yesterday afternoon.Today at 5pm, 24 hours after turning it on, I came home to a huge flood in my living room again!!!!And of course they aren't there on Saturday, so I have to live through a hot weekend once again without having any air conditioning because this machine can't be trusted to be used without flooding my hard wood floors and warping them!!!

My advice is to stay far and away from this piece of trash!!!

I'm going to be demanding my money back.

Soleus 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With Dehumidifier & Fan - Soleus PE209R32DB Review

Soleus 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With Dehumidifier & Fan - Soleus PE209R32DBThis very expensive, extremely heavy apparatus leaks water uncontrollably. The built in water reservoir is of insufficient size and is one of the most ineffectively engineered designs I have ever seen. It is not only difficult to drain (via a 1 cm. diameter spigot at the back, for which the manufacturersupply a plastic attachable tube and a tray that looks like a mini cookie baking pan) but also requires CONSTANT attention and draining. Also, the spigot, when closed, leaks. We ended up having to plop the entire unit into a large pan at all times so that water didn't leak all over the floor. So much for "evaporative technology."

When we called the manufacturer regarding their "limited warranty," we were told that repair was not guaranteed and that we would pay the cost of shipping both ways. At 85 pounds, even boxing and shipping the unit is no small feat. We realized it would cost so much to box and ship that it probably wasn't even worth it. Since then it has sat in a useless heap in our basement. We used it for less than one month and spent close to $350.

Royal Sovereign ARP-1003E Portable Air Conditioner 10,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-1003E Portable Air Conditioner 10,000 BTU#1) [Marketing] It is clearly not self-evaporating (unless you live in a very dry climate).Sure, there's no bucket to empty - but a bucket would have been nice, since the unit is 100 pounds, and the drain plug is at the bottom. It holds about a pint, then...
#2) [Defect] leaks all over the carpet. At 59% relative humidity, it needs emptying every thirty minutes. We're going to have to replace a 4' x 6' piece of carpeting because the water it leaks has some kind of oily staining chemical residue.Even though the drain plug is secure & sealed, the leaks were coming from the inside the center of the unit.
#3) [Annoyance] It is loud.Very, very loud.Industrial facility loud.
#4) [Design Flaw] The heat exchanger vents hot air out a window, but does not replace it.This creates a negative pressure that draws air in from wherever it can - like unconditioned air from the rest of the house; or in our case, from the central air vents in the hot attic. So, while it's cool directly in front of the unit, the rest of the room becomes hotter than it would otherwise be.

It could work in a workshop or garage - somewhere you aren't necessarily worried about flooding & ridiculously loud noise, but I wouldn't recommend it for in-home use.

Maybe we got a bad one.Maybe they're all that way.Either way, it's going back.

Symphony Surround Offers EnvironmentallyFriendly Cooling Review

Symphony Surround Offers EnvironmentallyFriendly CoolingTo replace an aging WhisperCool TF3000, I purchased a Surround early in 2008 from Air & Water, one of two or three Web-only retailers offering the Symphony products in North America at the time.Having acquired AdobeAir in Phoenix, AZ (where I live), their scattered offerings have localized somewhat.Interestingly, AdobeAir Inc. is once again known as IMPCO, the name when founded in 1939 by the Goettl brothers. While not inventing evaporative cooling per se, the brothers brought into being the practical form factor for coolers we recognize as the standard used world wide to cool down the extreme heat of Earth's dry climates.Especially here in the Southwest USA, the Goettls are legendary and now as an Asian company exemplifies the progression of globalization.Find out more at [...].

Back to the cooler...I've owned several portable/mobile coolers over the years and the Surround has the best performance of the bunch. It blows a copious continuous blast of air 17 to 20 degrees F below ambient when humidities are less than 15%.I guestimate its runtime is approaching 3000 hours and has evaporated incalculable thousands of gallons of water. In comparison to the TF3000's draw of 400 watts, on high the Surround draws 80.That I can run it for most of the summer, waiting on the monsoon to use my 3.5 ton rooftop Trane, the Surround has saved me over a $1000.It has held up VERY well, particularly the fan, pump and chassis, considering we have some darned hard water in Arizona.

But living with the Surround hasn't been easy as early on I discovered it was poorly assembled with some sub-standard parts. Disassembly and reassembly is toilsome as two screws are hidden under the trickily fitted control panel (where flimsy wires need careful handling) while some assemblies are held in place by the correct fitting of snap together parts.Until I got the hang of it, three hands were required. And the hang of it I got since opening the Surround has become near-chronic.

It stopped irrigating the "wood wool" pad after about a week of use.I got inside it and discovered metal shavings, plastic sprues and quite a lot of pad debris.Wow.This pretty much clogged things up and a thorough cleaning got the water flowing again. Here I also found a cracked t-fitting for the two irrigation tubes, fixed with a cable tie and aquarium sealant. The padding was sloppily fitted and I tidied that up some. But as time went on the irrigation tubes or humidity valve continued to clog with pad debris.I completely removed the pad and shook vigorously whereupon enough crap fell out to loosely fill a 10 oz. glass.Since then, clogging has diminished but as with any evap cooler, on going cleanup is a necessity. But with the Surround it's more often than not and unnecessarily routine and tedious. However, considering the exceptional performance, the maintenance effort is more than worth it.

Why didn't I return it for an exchange? One, it was highly probable the replacement would have been just as bad.Or worse. Two, had the fixes been beyond my capabilities or unsuccessful, I would have.

And now the nit-picks.The low speed is too high; I could use a slower setting. The casters are better than nothing, but moving a fully filled Surround is tricky on both bare floors and carpeting. On that note, there is no baffling in the tub and water WILL slosh out if you're too abrupt.I found the "humidity control" to be worthless even before the knob broke. The ice door up front is two by one and a half inches - you need to scoop crushed ice with a spoon or jam cubes one at a time. That's ridiculous considering you need a "ton" of ice for about fifteen minutes of three to four degrees cooler air.

The Surround has otherwise convenient features with a pretty and pleasant design.I would like to believe, as a now global enterprise, Symphony has cleaned up its act and quality control has moved beyond... crap.Personally, I would (and probably will) buy another, no questions asked.Even at twice its outstanding price, it is light years ahead of the competition.Right now it's 97 degrees F with 7% humidity and I'm comfy and cool here at my keyboard.

GE Thru-the-Wall Air Conditioner AJCQ08ACC Review

GE Thru-the-Wall Air Conditioner AJCQ08ACCBought the 10,000btu unit but I'm sure this mode is engineered the same.

If you use the A/C in the Continuous fan mode (most window type A/C units use this mode)
the unit works fine and is recommended.... BUT

If you want to use it in the Cycle fan mode (most whole house units use this mode)
the unit doesn't work correctly due to the thermister (temperature sensor) NOT
sensing room temperature because room air is needed to operate the sensor
correctly and cycle mode doesn't initially run the fan to pull room air into the unit.
The sensor can lag several degrees (8-14) behind actual room temperatures.
Needs engineering enhancement, like a remote thermostat, to work correctly.
GE actually blow me off as to a fix, so I'm stuck with a unit that doesn't run in
cycle mode and isn't worth a hill of beans!

Whynter Eco Friendly 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - Platinum Review

Whynter Eco Friendly 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - PlatinumThis portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

12000 Btu Ductless Split Air Conditioner Review

12000 Btu Ductless Split Air ConditionerI recently purchased this unit and had it installed. The installation went OK but the instructions that come with the system are real vague and the English translation is a bit rough. The system is flimsy and cheaply made of plastic. When I opened the cover to the filters one of the hinges was broken. After installing, the fan on the indoor unit ran at one speed and that was very slow.I called Amcor product support and seems they have only one guy, Don, who supports the split system products. He is knowledgeable but I got the runaround and some goofy answers on my first two calls. On the third call I finally nailed him down and he said he believed it was a loose set screw on the impeller and I would have to get a technician out to take the unit apart and tighten the set screw.I was not about to pay for a technician to repair my brand new system.Unfortunately, if he had sent a new indoor unit I would have also had to pay for the re-installation.Amcor was not willing to pay for any of this.I finally talked Don into walking me through the disassembly and I tightened the set screw.Everything worked fine after this. This is more trouble than I should have to go through for a new system.I would not recommend anyone buy this brand.

Fedders AZEY08F2A White 3500/8000 BTU 10.8 EER Heat And Cool Window Air Conditioner with Full Funct Review

Fedders AZEY08F2A White 3500/8000 BTU 10.8 EER Heat And Cool Window Air Conditioner with Full FunctFought like the dickens to get this specific version because only one other on the market has the following:
... Controls on the left
...8000btu or less WITH HEAT (not heat pump, electric heat to warm you)
... Remote

The other costs hundreds more and is a Friedrich.I rarely turn on the AC and didn't want to spend that much more.AAFeders dot com has these in stock as of May 2010.YesINCORRECTLY SPELLED.Delivery cross country is in just days.THE GREAT
Sometimes just a whisper OF QUIET but it can gurgle a bit like a tiny babbling brook.
When I cleaned up I realize this might be because the foam insulation strips were left off.If I find out I'll let you know in an update.
Heat is constant air sound like a white noise machine and though it feels only lukewarm, it actually will take the room to 86d degrees and roast you like a piglet in no time at all.
Cool feels fantastic, but I'm not having a hot day here yet.

THE NOT SO GREAT
The Fan Speed button on the control panel FAILS in every mode except cool.It operates in LOW ONLY unless I use the REMOTE to select Med and High speed fan activity.

NOT as QUIET as I wanted. At 14ft you don't hear it at all but at 12inches to 3ft it is loud enough to disturb low volume tv watching but it doesn't do any annoying groaning, popping or banging as it cycles.I'm a light sleeper and was able to sleep inches from it.

The picture if you see one where the louvers run the full width of the top of the unit THAT IS NOT RIGHT.That's the 10000BTU unit. This version has the older look with small set of controls top left taking up what would be some of the louver space.

The description says the louvers rotate up and down.Well they do rotate UP and back to neutral but NOT DOWN.

I'll post a pic so you can see.Global Industrial dot com had shown it right but is out of stock and took the listing down altogether.Haven't tested the AUTO feature. If it works well it will be a first for any heating or cooling appliance I've bought to actually have even a reasonably accurate thermostat function.

If you are wondering why I give it such a high rating, it is an inexpensive model at $308-315 (don't pay more than $375) and its annoyances/flaws are easy to deal with.

**MEASURING WINDOW OPENING**
Do notice the image added. The minimum height needed for this model is 16.25 inches and 16.5 would make it easier on your installer. It is not the 15+ stated on some store's tech sheet.

When measuring start ABOVE the lip some window frame have.Don't start down on the sill as the installation manual indicates. I did that and if I didn't have an installer who could reconfig my window the unit would have had to be shipped back!

Don't assume your window can go up where the bottom of the edge of the front most pane lines up with the bottom of the upper pane. You may have stops and other window elements that prevent the lower sash from rising that much.Really push it up all the way then measure, don't assume.

Honeywell RUVLAMP1/C UV Air Treatment System Review

Honeywell RUVLAMP1/C UV Air Treatment SystemI purchased the Honeywell UV light system from a major home supply company as I was having a mold smell in my HVAC system in the summertime. We had the vents cleaned and sprayed with anti mold/fungal spray and two weeks later it was back. We had our HVAC company come out and tell us the coils were dirty and covered with some mold on the downstream side. They would have to remove the entire coil box from our crawlspace (cut the refrigriant lines!!!), break it open, clean it out and then replace the entire unit for the low, low price of $500. Forget it. I bought a can of coil cleaner, put on my rubber gloves and safety goggles and got into the unit from the upstream and downstream sides, cleaned it and installed this unit to keep the mold from growing.

The unit itself comes with the bulb and socket with a plug and good instructions on how to install. You will need to have an outlet near by which I didn't. (Needed to run a new outlet near the install site)You will also need a hole saw that can cut through metal or a saw and a very steady hand. It can be done, just be carefull to cut the hole correctly and clean up the shavings.

Installed, plugged in and working fine. No more mold smell. It's a quartely check of the bulb to wipe it down and make sure it's still on. There is no on-off switch, just plug it in and it's on.

JUST A NOTE: DO NOT PLUG THE BULB IN UNTIL IT'S IN THE DUCTWORK!! DO NOT LOOK AT THE BULB WHEN IT'S ON. It can damage your eyesight.Install the bulb in the system and then plug it in. There is a little blue light on the face of the unit that lets you know it's on.

It's an easy install and does work.

Amana 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner - AP095R Review

Amana 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner - AP095RI bought this model for a bedroom and it takes a while to get used to the racket. The fan mode is quiet, but once the compressor kicks in to cool things down it sounds like a locomotive!

I would think twice before buying another portable unit like this one, and most certainly would not buy a second "Amana." I need some sleep, and this certainly was not considered when they designed this model a/c.

Then finally the thing went haywire!

A few months into purchase the temperature setting went to ninety nine degrees on it's own, and the unit died a fairly quick death. The warantee replaced the unit after a few thousand calls for repair, during which I had to deal with "Haier" not the "Amana Company"

Talk about things not being what the seem - it is just labeled "Amana" proving "Cheap Trick" is not just the name of a rock band.

The AirFlow Breeze Home Heating/Cooling System (Almond) (Fits 4"W x 10"L opening) Review

The AirFlow Breeze Home Heating/Cooling SystemThe vent I was boosting is on the floor and I was hoping the AirFlow would work better than my Suncourt EQ2. I should have done a little more research online before buying. One website indicated that the AirFlow would boost 60% while the EQ2 boots 80%. My thinking was that two fans would be better than one. Unfortunately, that didn't turn out to be the case and the EQ2 does have more boosting capability.

However, the AirFlow works and the design is nice in that it fits into the vent instead of over the vent. My floor vent isn't in a high-traffic area so this feature wasn't a benefit since my EQ2 wasn't likely to be tripped over or kicked around. The flush design will work in a wall vent which is one advantage over the EQ2. The AirFlow and EQ2 generate about the same noise level.

Ha Sh CV-PD13PX 13000 Btu Portable Air Conditioner Review

Ha Sh CV-PD13PX 13000 Btu Portable Air ConditionerI have a severe case of what is most often referred to as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS.) It is a medical condition, but not an "allergy" per se because it is not an immune system dysfunction involving histimines, allergens, etc.

I've had this problem for 11 years, but I have used window air conditioners without a problem. In the last month, this is the third portable air conditioner I have tried unsuccessfully. They all seem to emit plastic or chemical vapors of some kind, which gives me headaches that can last for days.I am starting to suspect one reason for this problem is the location of the fan motor.

On most portable units, the motor for the indoor fan is not located on the external chamber, as it is with window units. On window units, the fan that circulates the indoor cold air, is driven by a motor on the external side of a wall that also drives the outside fan. This wall separates the inside cool air circulation from the outside hot air circulation. The vapors coming off that motor never enter the indoor cooled air which enters the room, because the indoor fan is driven by a shaft coming through that wall from the outside side where the motor is, and the vapors from that motor remain outside.

Another thing causing these sensitivity problems for me could be the special plastics and circuit board vapors used in the controls.Again, on window air conditioners they seem to be located where they will get drawn out by air draft to the outside part of the air conditioner.Portables seem to put these controls directly in the path of the indoor cooled air.

On the portable units I've seen so far, there two fans. There is a separate indoor fan exposed to the indoor cooling air. This motor may be gassing off.But I really don't know for sure if this is the reason for the vapors that give me headaches.I only know I cannot use this air conditioner and I am very upset about it because, otherwise, it seems like a very nice, well-engineered unit.

Today, I bought this Sharp CV-PD13PX. The store had it on display yesterday and I was able to give it the sniff test before I took it home. It passed the sniff test in the store. To buy it, I had to pay $50 to become a "member" of the store that sold it, but it seemed worth it. The price was right. Also, there are very few appliance stores and big boxes that sell portable air conditioners in the isolated valley where I live.

Unfortunately, as the unit was running at home I started to get more of a vapor plastic/chemical "new car" smell, especially when I got close to it. I suspect this may be coming from the motor or some other internal components, (not the plastic housing) because it seems to worsen (or at least not improve) as it runs. The vapor problem for me on this unit is not nearly as bad as it was on the 10,000 BTU Sharp that I tried a few days ago. That one was not on store display and did not even pass the "sniff test" when I opened it at home (see my other review.)

I am going to return this one too, because I do have a headache, though not quite as bad as the one I had a few days ago from the other Sharp. I hope the headache does not last for two days like that other one did.

My wife and daughter don't hardly smell it at all but I do, because I am so sensitive to them. This is a great air conditioner, but I am giving it only three stars because I was upset that Sharp has overlooked one detail, rather than making it a totally innocuous unit that people like myself can use.I'm sure they could make it that good if they wanted to, but like I said, this seems like a problem with most, if not all portables at the present time. I just thought Sharp might have been a cut above in that regard. I might still try one or two more portables sold locally before I give up on them, and try to make a window unit work for my apartment with its sliding glass windows.I started with the higher end units.

It seems rediculous for these units to have these "air purifying" high-tech gimmicks, like ionizers, when the materials of the unit itself contaminate the air with less-than-healthy, if not toxic, vapors to breathe with possibly the same effect as second hand smoke (industry and insurance companies seem to turn a blind eye to research in this area.)

As time goes on, check my reviews, if this issue interests you.I really wish someone would make a good basic portable with all the reliability and hygienic (with regard to chemical/plastic vapors)features of a window air conditioner, preferable from aluminum, not plastic.Maybe some company will, or maybe a company already does, but just not sold in my area, or in the USA.

June 6th

Finally decided to give up on portables after I tried a couple of other makes/models, and ran into similar problems, and headaches round the clock.

Then I bought a SHARP AF-S85PX (8,000 BTU, 10.7 EER) window air conditioner and installed it today. It is actually just as quiet or quieter than the Sharp 10,000 or 13,000 BTU Portables and, aside from some initial gassing out, seems to be pretty innocuous with regard to toxic chemical vapor and/or plastic vapor emissions. Even when first opening the box, there was very little, if any toxic emission build-up. Built well and packed excellently. Price was good too. $190. Haven't had a chance to see how it performs on a hot day, but it has a powerful fan and very cold blowing in cool mode. Amazon doesn't have this model for sale yet but when it does, I will have used it a while and will do a review, but my first impression is to give it 5 stars!

It was a lot of work and money to build a hardwood frame planed/fitted into the tracks of a sliding sash, with a plexiglass window above it.I still have to make a tall slim screen to fit next to it on the back track. And I have to do this for 4 windows in this apartment. If I move, I have to do it all over again (hopefully able to use most of the same pieces.) Many people don't have the skill I have, and just suffer in the heat.

I really wish someone would make (or, if already made, just sell in my area) a less toxic portable, just like a window air conditioners with lots of metal (instead of plastic,) and with a minimum of VOC emittingplastic, circuit boards, and motor, exposed to the indoor cooled air.

I'm not the only one with sensitivities.I recently heard from my neighbor of an octogenian woman that got such headaches and allergies to a window air conditioner that she just suffered in the heat with it off, until she moved.

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote Control Review

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote ControlUPDATE 5/5/2010: This unit is still running as efficiently and effectively as ever. We are very, very happy with our purchase.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at our local Costco (because of good pricing and their great return policy) after researching and reading mixed online reviews on MANY, MANY portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're currently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA near L.A.) right on the ocean and the humidity is pretty high. We've used it on days with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are still waiting for a really hot day to hit. It might not happen this year, but it certainly did last year. We use it in our upstairs bedroom--approximately 180 square feet--with the door shut to keep our cats out.

The results:

* Noise: Fantastic. We used to have one fan blowing on full-speed in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan was, by probably 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a little water trickling from time to time, but that doesn't really bother us, and it's certainly not constant. We sleep like babies with this unit about a foot away from the bed.

* Cooling: Again, top-notch. I really wasn't expecting much from a portable after reading so many bad reviews for all of the portable air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it was 83F outside (and probably close to 90F in our bedroom) and, being pessimistic in our expectations, we put it on the MegaCool setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2 hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse (approximately 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had already dropped a good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a few more hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--better than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what felt like near 50F is very reasonable. Since then, we've kept it between 67F and 70F.

* Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the battery life.

* Dehumidifying: It's unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the air here. Remember, we live right on the ocean, so it's always very humid. I LOVE that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and that my husband and I can sleep touching without sticking to each other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is really wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified bedroom, it gets very close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair immediately starts curling. My husband tends to laugh at how quickly the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I never had this experience with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It dehumidifies REALLY well.

* Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and probably could have gotten away with doing it once. A lot of the water evaporates right out of the window, and the tank seems to have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if the tank gets too full. The method is also pretty easy. The drain is far enough off the floor that you can use a bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even though it has an on/off valve, the off position doesn't seem to work. We have to make sure the stopper is in securely no matter what setting the valve is on.

* Construction: Seems to be quite durable, but not overly heavy. My husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was definitely heavy, but it was doable (I'm 6', average to above-average strength for a woman, and not too concerned about breaking a nail, though). Once out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.

* Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and not perfectly written, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to assemble most of the unit without them if you have a decent amount of common sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any better. From my research, they all use similar methods, so I can't really complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is designed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece needs to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a slight problem with this because we have windows that open horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or wooden--it's recessed and metal. We ended up having to make a workaround--some measuring and a quick trip to the local lumber yard, and we had a few plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something solid, the other braces the sliding part of the window up against the unit. A bit of a pain, but not too bad nor too ugly.

* Other features: The adjustable louvers work very well. We like to point them up at the ceiling while we sleep, giving nice cool air and great circulation without freezing us out. The Plasmacluster functionality is nice, but when it's on, the unit shows a very BRIGHT blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run Plasmacluster at night--you may need to find a way to cover the light up. [EDIT 5/5/2010: We have since discovered the nifty "Lights" button on the remote control. This turns off the lights on the unit without making you turn off the Plasmacluster functionality, so no worries there any more.]

All in all, we're both so glad we bought this unit. We were mulling over whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought for a few months. We agree that we should have just gone ahead and done it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been much more bearable, and we would have been much better rested!!
