Amcor AL10000EH 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Heater Review

Amcor AL10000EH 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner and HeaterI have had 3 of these units over the past 3 years; however, I only purchased one of them.I purchased this item about 3 years ago.It worked great for about 8 months.I didn't even have to drain the water. It just worked. Then, the compressor blew out.Because it had a 5 year warranty on the compressor, I called the company, and they actually sent me out a new unit.I can definitely say that my experience with their customer service was great. So, I got the new unit a few days later, plugged it in, but the compressor on that one did not work, so they went me my third one, which was about a year ago.Today, the compressor on that one went out.

In addition, there is a very significant design flaw. When you do have to drain the water from the unit, the drain is almost on the bottom of the unit. When you unplug the hole in order to attach the drainage pipe, water leaks (floods) out of the unit.My carpet has been soaked numerous times over the past year. For anyone who does actually buy this unit, I would recommend (1) build a box about 6 inches high which is large/strong enough to place the unit on top of, (2) connect the drainage hose permanently (use duct tape if you have to, that's what I did), (3) place a bucket at the back of the unit and put the other end of the drainage hose into the bucket. This way, the unit can drain continuously and you don't have to worry about it flooding the carpet or floor when you pull out the plug when it is full.Just let it drain continually.

Product Description:
The Amcor AL 10000EH portable air conditioner is designed to fit most average-size rooms up to 300sq.ft. This model also functions as a 38 pint dehumidifier.Self Evaporating Technology - During the cooling process, water is extracted from the air into the unit. Most of this water is then recycled and used to cool the unit and make it run more efficiently.Approximately 65 to 70% of water condensed is evaporated out with the exhaust air, reducing the hassle of emptying the water tank constantly. This unit has a built-in water tank (not removable) with a drain outlet, and a water tube. When the tank fills, the compressor stops operating and the power light will flash. This indicates that the tank should be emptied. Included with the unit is a window and a wall exhaust kit. AC must be vented via exhaust hose (included). If your room has a heat source such as direct sunlight or computer servers, the AC coverage area may be reduced.

Whynter Eco Friendly 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - Platinum Review

Whynter Eco Friendly 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - PlatinumThis portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

Amcor PLM14000E 14,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Amcor PLM14000E 14,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsI purchased an Amcor PLM 14000E portable air conditioner based on its selling points, including being able to use it in a standard outlet, its light weight and size, and the BTU rating. The a/c unit arrived in a box that had significant wear and tear, but the unit was intact and all parts were there. It actually weighs 83 pounds (per UPS scales) vs. the 75 pounds as indicated by the manufacturer and the 58 pounds indicated in the description. The installation and setup was very easy - about 10 minutes. The weather strip provided by the manufacturer is basic and cheap. I used a better quality weather strip from Home Depot. After waiting the required 2 hours, I turned the unit on. The unit ran well for approximately 3 hours, and then the built in Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) tripped. I reset the AFCI (built into the unit's power cord) and the unit ran for about 10 minutes and the AFCI tripped again. I cannot get the unit to run for more than 10 or 15 minutes without the AFCI shutting the unit down.
I plugged the unit into a standard, 15amp household circuit. I checked the voltage at the outlet and it read OK. I also calculated the total load of all the lights and appliances in the room to see if I was drawing too many amps. If I powered on EVERYTHING that's plugged into my master bedroom circuit, including the new A/C unit, I might be pushing 15 amps. The unit indicated it took 9.5 amps and I typically only have two 75 watt lamps running at the same time the A/C unit was running. Total amps never exceed 10 or 11.

I called Amcor and they told me the AFCI tripping issues was a "known problem" (quoted directly from the service representative) and that it was due to the very sensitive nature of the built in AFCI. He went on to say I could call an electrician to inspect my home wiring (house is only 8 years old) and/or have a 20 amp dedicated circuit installed, and/or have the built in AFCI removed from the unit's powercord. He was sure to emphasize that he nor Amcor supported removing the AFCI unit. The other option the Amcor rep suggested was to return the item and request a refund - which I did.

So I'm out roughly $140 in shipping charges due to Amcor selling a portable air conditioner with a "known problem." I'm not sure it qualifies as a defect, but it certainly does not work as advertised.

Other "issues" include:

The fan is a bit noisy and does not shut off after reaching the desired temperature set on the thermostat, but the compressor does shut down. It would be better if both the fan and compressor shut off.
The remote control has a display panel that can easily get out of sync with the unit's display panel. If you change the thermostat temperature on the remote control and do not point it directly at the unit, the change will not take affect on the unit, however, the remote's display will indicate the new temperature setting. I'm not sure how useful the remote's display panel is.

Whynter Eco Friendly 13000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - Platinum Review

Whynter Eco Friendly 13000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - PlatinumI've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use.The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

NewAir AC-12000E 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With R410A Refrigerant Review

NewAir AC-12000E 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With R410A RefrigerantI have always used an evaporative cooler since I live in a low-humidity environment. It works really well unless it get over 96 and this year was especially warm so we decided to get an AC for the bedroom, the warmest room. I did lots of comparing, reviewing and trying to figure out exactly what would end up being the best value. I saw this product and it was something I hoped would work.

It came quickly. The company sends you the FedEx number so you can track it and know when to expect it. After opening it, I was glad we went portable instead of window unit. It looks pretty cool and isn't too huge. The thing for the exhaust in the window looks good when viewed from outside the house. The air comes out very cool and gives instant relief. It isn't loud. The remote is nice - I didn't think we would use but we do. Not having to empty the water is a handy feature also.

I am really happy with this AC. :)
