16" Evaporative Cooler Direct Drive Variable Speed With Tank Cart Review

16' Evaporative Cooler Direct Drive Variable Speed With Tank CartMy shop is located in the SE part of the country so heat and humidity are a real problem, especially when working outdoors.
While looking for a solution, I started to wonder if the "swamp coolers" I saw on the side lines at football games might be the ticket.I was skeptical, due to the fact that the inherent high humidity would diminish the evaporative cooling that enables these devices to work.Still I saw these things everywhere, so I was interested. After a little researchI found that the current models overcome a lot of the evaporative cooling/humidity issue via modern design.
My hopes were dashed when I started pricing these coolers, BIG BUCKS!I could install a separate AC system for the same price. Then by "divine intervention", I saw a portable version, when I walked into my local NAPA store. The salesman told me the way they market these coolers, is to drop them off at local garages during the day and then pick them up after it gets hot.Once people see the difference they make, they're sold.I was sold too when I got a great deal on the end of season model.
I'm impressed with the Port-a-Cool.Temps have only been in the 80's with low humidity, but the cooling is noticeable. The fan is big enough to make a "breeze" even sitting on the driveway. It's easy to move around can be used during any outdoor activity. So far this has been a great and cost effective cooling solution.
Tip:Add ice to the reservoir for even greater cooling effect.

Sunpentown WA-1410H 14,000btu Portable AC with Self-Evaporating Technology (w...Great item for portablity, though slightly pricey. Be warned though, I cannot recommend using this seller "Buy From The Best Inc." In dealing with them I found their customer service was unresponsive and rude. They tried to pass the buck on to amazon and expected me to do their job for them by working out the processing problems with them. When I simply told them I expect the item I paid for within 10 days, they were UNABLE to do it and actually said that asking for my item was a threat. Haha! It had already been over a week since my order was placed. Don't risk your time and money, find a better seller. I wisely cancelled my order with them, save yourself the pain in the butt!

Product Description:
Stay COOL or WARM and breathe fresher air with our newest 14,000btu units. Ideally cools or heats an area up to 500sq.ft. Effectively improves air circulation in poorly ventilated spaces and maximizes energy efficiency. Uses new UL required LCDI plug. Self-Evaporating Technology - during the cooling process, water is extracted from the air into the unit. In Cool mode, most of this water is recycled and used to cool the cooling coils and make it cool more efficiently. As this technology does not take in effect in heating mode, continuous drainage is highly recommended when running in Heat mode. UV Light - the technology of UV Germicidal lighting (UV-C) to effectively inactivate microorganisms. Due to its short wavelength (200 to 270nm), UV-C penetrate outer membranes of bacteria, yeasts, molds and viruses - attacking the DNA which makes up their sturcture. By breaking the chains within the DNA, the Microorganism is then unable to reproduce and die. UV Germicidal light has proven effective in a growing number of applications where control of microorganisms is important. Note: Exhaust hose installation required (all standard accessories included). This unit require a dedicated 20A circuit.

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4012 Portable Air Conditioner 12,000 BTUFor what it's worth, a certain store with the intitials 'HD' will take back anything, even after a year.We bought this from '*ears' (if you know what I mean) and I am sure they could care less about anything 13 mos. out from the warranty period. Here's my review.

I bought 2 Royal Soverign a/c units, 12,000 BTU from Sears in 6/08.We haven't used them a whole lot. Ours are tan with a black exhaust area/top. Models ARP 3012. We paid $599 each.

We left for the day and like we always do, turn the a/c to a lower setting.A family member had stopped over and I had her check to make sure the a/c was on. She said the unit upstairs was off.I thought that was odd, as I had left it on.When she turned it on, it sounded like 100 forks in a garbage disposal.I could hear it over the phone. Apparently, due to the issue, the unit was over-heating and then turning itself off.We are lucky the house didn't burn down.

When we got home we looked into the issue and after removing the tubing from the unit, we instantly found shards of cheap black plastic. Some parts looked tube like.We removed the 14 screws on the back, cleaned up the broken plastic laying inside the unit (we thought it was part of the exhaust) and thinking everything was fine (but were were still going to look into what that tubing was for) and we put the back of the unit back on and we turned it on.More horrible breaking of plastic sounds and then more plastic was sucked into the tubing. We're thinking that the case that surrounds the fan blade and compressor is breaking up. We are sure that this will eventually happen with our 2nd unit.I would not buy a Royal Soverign brand. I'll check back and give an update when I can as we have plans to drop it off at a service location. The compressor is covered for 5 years. We will not be paying a dime to have this fixed!

DeLonghi Pinguino PAC260 Portable Air Conditioner - 9000 BTU Review

DeLonghi Pinguino PAC260 Portable Air Conditioner - 9000 BTUDear H&G Enthusiast,
I too was disapointed by the results that I obtained.I used the PAC260 for almost 8 years, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.I got immediated relief when I turned it on.I got 20-35 degrees of temperature relief and 20-45% humidity releif from this machine.it to 20-30minutes to get this relief.I never used the water in my PAC290 and got this kind of releif.I was told that the PAC260 and the PAC290 as I used it were the same.they clearly are not the same.Another issue that you did not adress which I hope you will address if the air filter provided with the machine. In my old PAC290 the filter would be caked with particles after a week. This one is as clean as th eday I got th emachine installed several days ago.Are you finding this to be the case, I would appreciate knowing your result. It is a great machine, but does not quite live up to the PAC290 that I purchased in 1995.

Part of your review
We were disappointed to find out after purchasing this unit that it takes a long time to cool a room. It's not like a window unit that pumps out frigid air for quick relief. For the 150-square-foot office in our home, it takes 6-8 hours to lower the temperature from the 80s to the low 70s. But none of this machine's slow-cooling characteristics are mentioned in any of the materials.

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Sunpentown 12,000-BTU Portable Air ConditionerI bought this sytem thinking it would at least provide some comfort from the Southern Cal heatwave we got durring the summer of 2006. Bottom line, IT DID NOT. The square footage of the top floor of our apartment is approximately 500 square feet. The largest temperature drop was from 91 degreees to 89 degrees at 9:00PM. Even sitting directly in front of the system's fan (approx 10 feet away) did little to cool one person, so forget about cooling a small room. Please look elsewhere if you want a room larger than a small closet cooled.

Kenwood KW85 Portable Air Conditioner - 8500 BTU Review

Kenwood KW85 Portable Air Conditioner - 8500 BTUIf only this gorgeous looking air conditioner could really cool a room!! I am so in love with the stunning sleek design and shiny bright white color. Very simple and professional looking. Sturdy build. Not cheap looking, like others I have seen at Home Depot and Sam's Club.

I bought this for my apartment. It has 8500 BTU. I planned to use it in the living room (13x15 or 208 square feet) during the day, and then the bedroom at night (a bit smaller). I opened the package immediately the night I brought it home, but once I turned the power on for the first time, I was surprised that high power, turned to be little more than a feeble blowing of air. This weak fan, does not allow any of the cold air to actually push out of the unit and cool the room!!! Even if you stood 2 feet from it, it barely blew on you!!! Who would engineer such a thing?

The real test was the next day, when temperatures outside soared to 93 degrees. My unit could not manage to make the room cooler than 88 degrees for the entire day!

So disappointing that such a sleek looking and digital panneled portable a/c could disappoint like this. I read the entire manual, hooked it up properly and even called the company, Kenwood. Kenwood didn't really care. They told me it is discontinued and to just return it!! Strange that customer service was so lackadaisical and uncommitted.

With all the terribly ugly looking portable units out there, I had really wanted this to be my new a/c, but I will have to look elsewhere, and this time for something having perhaps 12000 BTU and a fan that blows like a tornado! Please, someone, design a beautiful looking portable a/c for far under $600 that works! What a pain. I hate the thought of lugging this 80 plus pound machine back to the store.

Ha Sh CV-PD13PX 13000 Btu Portable Air Conditioner Review

Ha Sh CV-PD13PX 13000 Btu Portable Air ConditionerI have a severe case of what is most often referred to as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS.) It is a medical condition, but not an "allergy" per se because it is not an immune system dysfunction involving histimines, allergens, etc.

I've had this problem for 11 years, but I have used window air conditioners without a problem. In the last month, this is the third portable air conditioner I have tried unsuccessfully. They all seem to emit plastic or chemical vapors of some kind, which gives me headaches that can last for days.I am starting to suspect one reason for this problem is the location of the fan motor.

On most portable units, the motor for the indoor fan is not located on the external chamber, as it is with window units. On window units, the fan that circulates the indoor cold air, is driven by a motor on the external side of a wall that also drives the outside fan. This wall separates the inside cool air circulation from the outside hot air circulation. The vapors coming off that motor never enter the indoor cooled air which enters the room, because the indoor fan is driven by a shaft coming through that wall from the outside side where the motor is, and the vapors from that motor remain outside.

Another thing causing these sensitivity problems for me could be the special plastics and circuit board vapors used in the controls.Again, on window air conditioners they seem to be located where they will get drawn out by air draft to the outside part of the air conditioner.Portables seem to put these controls directly in the path of the indoor cooled air.

On the portable units I've seen so far, there two fans. There is a separate indoor fan exposed to the indoor cooling air. This motor may be gassing off.But I really don't know for sure if this is the reason for the vapors that give me headaches.I only know I cannot use this air conditioner and I am very upset about it because, otherwise, it seems like a very nice, well-engineered unit.

Today, I bought this Sharp CV-PD13PX. The store had it on display yesterday and I was able to give it the sniff test before I took it home. It passed the sniff test in the store. To buy it, I had to pay $50 to become a "member" of the store that sold it, but it seemed worth it. The price was right. Also, there are very few appliance stores and big boxes that sell portable air conditioners in the isolated valley where I live.

Unfortunately, as the unit was running at home I started to get more of a vapor plastic/chemical "new car" smell, especially when I got close to it. I suspect this may be coming from the motor or some other internal components, (not the plastic housing) because it seems to worsen (or at least not improve) as it runs. The vapor problem for me on this unit is not nearly as bad as it was on the 10,000 BTU Sharp that I tried a few days ago. That one was not on store display and did not even pass the "sniff test" when I opened it at home (see my other review.)

I am going to return this one too, because I do have a headache, though not quite as bad as the one I had a few days ago from the other Sharp. I hope the headache does not last for two days like that other one did.

My wife and daughter don't hardly smell it at all but I do, because I am so sensitive to them. This is a great air conditioner, but I am giving it only three stars because I was upset that Sharp has overlooked one detail, rather than making it a totally innocuous unit that people like myself can use.I'm sure they could make it that good if they wanted to, but like I said, this seems like a problem with most, if not all portables at the present time. I just thought Sharp might have been a cut above in that regard. I might still try one or two more portables sold locally before I give up on them, and try to make a window unit work for my apartment with its sliding glass windows.I started with the higher end units.

It seems rediculous for these units to have these "air purifying" high-tech gimmicks, like ionizers, when the materials of the unit itself contaminate the air with less-than-healthy, if not toxic, vapors to breathe with possibly the same effect as second hand smoke (industry and insurance companies seem to turn a blind eye to research in this area.)

As time goes on, check my reviews, if this issue interests you.I really wish someone would make a good basic portable with all the reliability and hygienic (with regard to chemical/plastic vapors)features of a window air conditioner, preferable from aluminum, not plastic.Maybe some company will, or maybe a company already does, but just not sold in my area, or in the USA.

June 6th

Finally decided to give up on portables after I tried a couple of other makes/models, and ran into similar problems, and headaches round the clock.

Then I bought a SHARP AF-S85PX (8,000 BTU, 10.7 EER) window air conditioner and installed it today. It is actually just as quiet or quieter than the Sharp 10,000 or 13,000 BTU Portables and, aside from some initial gassing out, seems to be pretty innocuous with regard to toxic chemical vapor and/or plastic vapor emissions. Even when first opening the box, there was very little, if any toxic emission build-up. Built well and packed excellently. Price was good too. $190. Haven't had a chance to see how it performs on a hot day, but it has a powerful fan and very cold blowing in cool mode. Amazon doesn't have this model for sale yet but when it does, I will have used it a while and will do a review, but my first impression is to give it 5 stars!

It was a lot of work and money to build a hardwood frame planed/fitted into the tracks of a sliding sash, with a plexiglass window above it.I still have to make a tall slim screen to fit next to it on the back track. And I have to do this for 4 windows in this apartment. If I move, I have to do it all over again (hopefully able to use most of the same pieces.) Many people don't have the skill I have, and just suffer in the heat.

I really wish someone would make (or, if already made, just sell in my area) a less toxic portable, just like a window air conditioners with lots of metal (instead of plastic,) and with a minimum of VOC emittingplastic, circuit boards, and motor, exposed to the indoor cooled air.

I'm not the only one with sensitivities.I recently heard from my neighbor of an octogenian woman that got such headaches and allergies to a window air conditioner that she just suffered in the heat with it off, until she moved.

Danby DPAC12099 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Danby DPAC12099 12,000 BTU Portable Air ConditionerI turn into a complete diva when I am hot!!! Wherefore, I bought this unit about a month ago and I could not be more pleased!!! This machine cools practically my entire upstairs. Likewise, after about 3 weeks of running it basically non-stop, I finally emptied the water and it was barely even full. I assume it could be ran a few more months before it even needed dumped.

In regards to the noise quality, I do not find the unit to be all that loud. In fact, I think that my portable fan is more noisy than this unit. In other words, I am able to sleep with it on high without any trouble. Additionally, in the afternoons, I may have to turn my television up a tiny bit more than normal in order to hear it.

Unfortunately, my place does not have separate a/c units for the 1st and 2nd levels. Therefore, I had to purchase this because the upstairs feels like a sauna without it. At the time, I could find a unit with 14,000 BTUs so I purchased this 12,000 one. If you are looking to cool an entire floor, I would suggest upgrading to a 14,000 BTU unit because as I said earlier, this unit cools practically my entire upstairs. However, I believe a 14,000 BTU unit would do a much better job when it comes to reaching the far bedroom. Nonetheless, if you have a small upstairs, this unit would be perfect.

I gave this system 4 stars because my only complaint about the unit involves the window attachments. Unfortunately, the system comes equipped for a sliding glass door but not for a window. Considering that I do not have a sliding glass door, I have had to rig mine to fit a window. (I am still in the process of making it work.) In short, the parts come with very tiny screws and no nuts. Wherefore, I suggest purchasing longer screws and some nuts to secure them with. Otherwise, the plastic pieces fall apart and it becomes a hassle to deal with. Likewise, unless you have a very narrow window, you may need to saw the additional piece to fit two of them together. Otherwise, you will have a huge gap in your window because the piece is not long enough to stretch across. Other than the window attachments not being designed well, I would have to say that I am extremely happy with my purchase. In other words, anything is better than sitting in the heat!!!

SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote ControlIts two years since I purchased this and happened upon this link today.I remember doing a great amount of research when I bought this unit.It is NOT like the one being reviewed with 2 stars.

One key point - it has two hoses - input and output (not one like many units out there). It's very good at evaporating the water it takes out of the room (the two hoses are supposedly responsible for this efficiency). I have yet to empty the tank. The unit comes with a window package that holds the tubes in place (its made of heavy duty plastic).

As to moving it around, no big problems - it is a beast to move on the stairs, but ..... its an air conditioner, not a fan.

I normally use it to cool down a 20x20 room (9 foot ceilings). It does take longer than I'd like, but if it's a humid night, it gets the room in a "sleepable" condition in about 1 hour.

The reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the remote control gives you options that you can't get from the panel. If you lose the remote, you lose the functionality (there may be a secret set of buttons you push to get the function, I haven't figure them out yet). The manufacturer's site is lacking in docs.

Product Description:
Providing cooler, fresher air for rooms up to 350 square feet, this portable three-in-one unit functions as an 11,000-BTU air conditioner, a 51-pint-per-day dehumidifier, and a three-speed fan with auto, high, and low settings. During the cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. Excess moisture gets pushed out with the exhaust air, resulting in a virtually no-drain unit. In extreme humid conditions, if condensation collects faster than it can evaporate, the excess water will collect in the built-in tank. When the tank becomes full, the compressor automatically shuts off and the "drainage needed" indicator illuminates.
The air conditioner also comes equipped with a dual-hose system that provides fast cooling. With one hose for air intake and the other for air exhaust, there's no negative pressure created inside the room. The unit's thermostat can be adjusted from 64 to 90 degrees F, while its digital thermostat control, LCD display, and remote control ensure simple operation. Choose between continuous "on" or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 24 hours. The unit also supplies a washable air filter, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and an easy-grip handle and casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, auto-swing louvers, an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5-1/2 feet), and Re-start IC Technology (unit restarts when power resumes after a power failure). The unit requires exhaust hose installation, and all standard accessories come included. With an energy-efficiency rating of 8.78, the 82-pound air conditioner measures 18-1/2 by 18 by 33-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Haier CPRD12XH7 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heating CapacityI purchase this product as it gave me the flexibility to Heat and Cool and be portable. The product seems to work as claimed but it does have some quirks that could make it better. The AC requires the condensation to be stored in the unit. When full it shuts off.The drain valve is on the back.Installation through a window is a bit poor with the attachements provided.I need to make some modifications to allow it to seal on my casement window.I really wanted to go through the wall, and I may in the future but the hose sizes not standard and it makes it difficult.

The real positive of this experience is the customer service of [...].I attempted to purchase this unit from another company and although it was cheaper I cancelled the order after multiple attempts to get it shipped.I was only able to communicate to them via email and looked up the company on Better Business and they had an "F" rating.I ordered this through [...] and had free shipping and it arrive on my doorstep the next day.All I can say is WOW.

SPT WA-1230E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

SPT WA-1230E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote ControlI bought this AC unit during the excess heat wave this summer. The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained.Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs.Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.

This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)

As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage.

Product Description:
Ideal for rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity and an energy-efficiency rating of 12.63. The unit also functions as a dehumidifier, removing up to 65 pints of moisture from the air per day (the dehumidifier functions automatically in AC mode). During the cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. The air conditioner comes equipped with a 3-1/5-pint water tank and two fan speeds, as well as a digital thermostat, digital temperature display, and remote control, which makes it simple to use. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. The unit also provides a 64- to 90-degree F thermostat, a washable air filter, an activated carbon filter to help remove odor, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and an easy-grip handle and large casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include an LCDI plug, fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, directional air discharge louvers, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). The unit requires exhaust hose installation, and all standard accessories come included. Weighing 76 pounds, the air conditioner measures 15-1/4 by 16-1/2 by 30-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

DeLonghi PAC W130E 13,000-BTU Eco-Friendly Portable Air Conditioner with Water Technology Review

DeLonghi PAC W130E 13,000-BTU Eco-Friendly Portable Air Conditioner with Water TechnologyI admit, I got suckered into buying this unit because of the marketing and slick featureset. What a disappointment.

I am returning it as quickly as possible, and would probably avoid Delonghi products going forward. I was trying to get information on where to buy replacement filters from Delonghi USA (& Canada), the former did not reply to several emails (USA tech support), and the latter - the Canadian support email bounced (no such mailbox). What a joke.

PROS:
Really nice & modern color scheme, graphite and silver.
Pretty blue LCD that displays everything you need to know.
Eco-friendly refrigerant
Side handles (because its very heavy)
3M Biosilver Techsystem

CONS:
VERY Noisy - sounds like an old dishwasher when cooling in Water to Air mode (swishing noise, I am guessing the rotary engine cooling off using the water).
Water refilling to get optimal cooling (to get 13K BTU) is annoying & frequent (Tested on a very hot day I had to refill it every 6 hours), I would bet that most people would give up on this eventually. Without the water, this unit does 9000 BTU in air cooling.
Huge - This thing is only portable due to the casters. Very bulky.
No Oscillating Louvers! The air is blown up in one direction, no choice.
No information on how (part#?) or where to buy the 3M filters that should be replaced once a year.
Heavy - Perhaps I'm being picky here, but this thing is so heavy (128 lbs).

What I recommend instead: The Sharp CVP10MX, as most people here (Amazon) have had a great experience with it. I recommend you have a look.

8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - EdgeStar Review

8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - EdgeStarSo, I live in a studio. Not verybig at all. You would think this air conditioner would be able to handle keeping it cool. Well, not so much.

Regardless of how low I set it, or how long I kept it running, it kept my studio at 78 degrees. It was actually a better deal to shut it off, open the windows/door and let the air circulate. It actually got cooler in there once I did that.

Moreover, the hose you connect to the window vent is an eye sore, and isn't flexible enough to let your place the unit somewhere convenient. So you end up having to leave the A/C unit in the middle of the room instead of neatly in a corner or against the wall because the vent hose doesn't allow otherwise.

This is pretty much the worse purchase I have made in a LONG time. Worse of all, it doesn't even make sense for me to return it. The seller charges as 12% "re-stocking fee". Moreover, I would need to carry the huge 70+lbs box up and down stairs to get it back to my work so UPS can pick it up. The box is very flimsy once you remove the nylon ribbons that it comes sealed with, and doesn't really allow you to transport it without spending some money on repackaging.

So yeah, I'm stuck with a $300 70+lbs paper weight. Good times.

[EDITED 07/30]: So I was contacted by the seller (CompactApplience) and their conclusion was that my studio was too big for the 8,000 BTU rating. They actually let me return just the A/C unit without having to worry about packing all the awkwardly-shaped pieces, and reimbursed me for everything, including shipping. Although I've decided NOT to try a different unit with a greater BTU rating, I'm leaving this review here so that hopefully people looking into buying this or any other unit are aware of the importance of considering the size of the room you're trying to cool down when you choose the unit BTU. I was remotely aware of that, but didn't look too much into it, and you saw what happened... Luckily for me, the seller handled the situation superbly well. A happy ending, after all. :)
